Holiday Weekend Phillies Happenings

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend!  Hunter Pence shared a small piece of his Thanksgiving pie via his Twitter feed:

@HunterPence3: Happy Thanksgiving everyone…..Let’s Go Eat! :)

Here is a VIDEO of Hunter with his family on Thanksgiving :O)

And just yesterday, Shane Victorino also took to Twitter to share his son Kingston’s birthday celebration with the world.  And no, I did not Photoshop this picture.  That really is Shane and Melissa Victorino dressed as clowns to entertain their kids.

Shane and Melissa are wonderful people and seriously super parents.  How lucky are those kids?

So while their teammates were having great times with their families, 3 other Phillies players / free agents had some food for thought along with their turkey.  Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Raul Ibanez were all offered arbitration before the holiday weekend.

The offers put the Phillies in a position to receive compensatory draft picks for each player who declines.  However, it also puts them in the position to get slightly screwed if any of them actually accepts.  Rollins will likely decline as arbitration only gives the accepting player a one year deal and a salary determined by a hearing.

However, if Madson does not get an offer to his liking, arbitration may be an easy way to big one-year pay check for him.  Then again, it also positions him as the set-up man for Jonathan Papelbon, making his dreams of a huge closer contract the following season unlikely.  Madson will likely decline.

The really weird one here is Ibanez.  There are not too many teams, if any, in the market for an almost 40-year old left fielder with declining stats.  Ibanez made $12 million last year and in a hearing, that would be taken into account.  Even if he got half that amount, it is still way too much to be playing a platoon guy.  With the odds of no one else signing him being pretty high, Ibanez might accept and that would be trouble for the Phillies payroll.  I cannot imagine what the Phillies are thinking here.

Each player has until December 7, 2011 to decide.  So continue digesting your holiday weekend feast.  You have just over a week before you may feel the need to be ill.  Let us hope not though :O)

What Phillies Fans Can Be Thankful For: 2010 Edition

Welcome to my annual Thanksgiving list!  As you are spending time with family and filling your bellies, take a few moments to think about all we can be thankful for.  I am very thankful for:

- Family, friends, food and fun!

- I am not a Washington Nationals fan

- A Phillies team that is filled not only with quality players, but quality people as well

- 4 straight years of October baseball

- Philly controversies, like the taser gun, for their sheer entertainment value

- This ESPN commercial; because it might be the funniest thing I have ever seen:

- Mets fans – because they make me giggle

- Sold out crowds every night!

- Umpires – because they make me feel really smart

- Seeing Roy Halladay pitch a playoff game no-hitter

- Other Phillies fans!  Even the weird ones ;o)

- The 2008 World Championship!  Because it will never get old :O)

This Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

And there is just one more thing to be thankful for; everything you see in this slideshow below:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Holidays, Baseball and Food Coma’s…

To start with, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and did not lapse into a turkey coma!  I also hope no one got trampled attempting to enter Wal-Mart at 3am on Friday ;o)  Holidays can either be fun or hazardous to your health…I hope you went with “fun.”

Speaking of holidays and shopping, what would you like to receive this holiday season?  I would like for Mike Schmidt to age backwards and play 3rd base for the Phillies again.

I would also like the Giants to release Tim Lincecum for his
bad, drug induced behavior so the Phillies can have him.  I also wish aliens would come down from outer space and give us back Cole Hamels: Version 2008.  Clearly, he was abducted and it is time to bring him back.

By the way, 3 years ago, current GM Ruben Amaro Jr., who was assistant GM at the time, asked a room full of female fans if they could sign any pitcher in the league to the Phillies, who would it be?  I shouted, “Tim Lincecum!”  Ruben looked at me like I was nuts and decided that the woman who suggested Brandon Webb had a better idea.  Webb went down with a shoulder injury in April 2009 and did not play the entire season.  Lincecum has now won 2 Cy Young’s in a row.  Hey Ruben, still think I am nuts?  Just a little holiday fun for you there :O)

Ok, so clearly we cannot sign Mr. Lincecum.  But the Phillies have a lot of work to do this off-season to improve the pitching staff.  It looks to be a quiet market right now.  Things should start to heat up when the Winter Meetings begin on December 7th.

The few moves made so far have not even made a small ripple in the atmosphere.  The signing of Juan Castro to replace Eric Bruntlett on the bench seems like a lateral move, rather than an improvement.  Castro hit .277 last year with the Dodgers but is a career .230 hitter.  This news is not exactly knocking Phillies fans out of their boots.  We hope bigger and better things will be coming soon…

In other news, Jamie Moyer was recently hospitalized and had surgery to remove an infected blood collection that may have resulted from his previous groin surgery.  It should not affect his Spring Training schedule and he appears to be recovering well.  I wish him luck!

Thumbnail image for PA040202 JAHapp.jpgFrom the long time veteran to the rookie, JA Happ has been named to the Topps’ 51st All-Rookie Team, which is just one of many honors he garnered this off-season.  Happ is still up for the Rookie of the Year award in the This Year In Baseball awards.
Voting continues until December 11th and many Phillies like Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and others are in the running.

Thumbnail image for shane melissa 2.jpgAnd finally, congratulations to Shane and Melissa Victorino who tied the knot earlier this month in Hawaii!  They are two really great people and I wish them all the best!

- Brittney Spears – she makes me feel SO much better about my own dysfunctional life.

- Jayson Werth’s pre-game workout routine:

Monkey eating.JPG

- Monkey’s…because they make me giggle.
-The Guinness Book of World’s Records – because I have always wondered how many rotations a human could make while hanging from a power drill…haven’t you?  It is 141…you can die happy now.
