NLDS Roster Announced

6a00e5513d181b8834013487fe1fcf970c-350wi.pngThe Phillies announced today who will be on the 25-man roster for the NLDS and there are really no surprises.  Those notable players who did not make it include Kyle Kendrick, Danys Baez and David Herndon.  Here is the breakdown:

Pitchers

Roy Halladay

Roy Oswalt

Cole Hamels

Joe Blanton

Brad Lidge

Ryan Madson

Jose Contreras

 J.C. Romero

Chad Durbin

Antonio Bastardo

Catchers

Carlos Ruiz

Brian Schneider

Infielders                            Outfielders

Ryan Howard

Jayson Werth

Chase Utley

Shane Victorino

Jimmy Rollins

Raul Ibanez

Placido Polanco

Ben Francisco

Wilson Valdez

Ross Gload

Mike Sweeney

Domonic Brown

Greg Dobbs

Going with 10 pitchers instead of 11 allows the Phillies to add more fire power to the bench.  They expect the 3 starters to go deep into games so extra long men in the pen will likely not be necessary.  Blanton will fill the role if needed.

As for Ruiz and Romero, manager Charlie Manuel says both players are fine and ready to play after suffering minor injuries on Sunday.

If you are going to the game tomorrow, here is the information about pre-game festivities and other highlights:

2:00 p.m. – Phillies Postseason Party begins on Citizens Bank Way. Features music by Mr. Greengenes; Highlights include an inflatable obstacle course for children, face painters, an extreme rock wall climb and a Velcro race.

Phillies Off-Season Report on 6-ABC

Last night, 6-ABC Philadelphia aired a special report on the Phillies Off-Season.  The report covered the weddings of Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, Jamie Moyer’s charity work, Chad Durbin’s business venture, the Phillies Cruise and Charlie Manuel’s weight loss.  The Phillies Cruise coverage is about 3 minutes into the program and you can see five of my photos featured in that portion of the report with my name listed underneath:

http://cdn.abclocal.go.com/static/flash/embeddedPlayer/swf/otvEmLoader.swf?version=&station=wpvi&section=&mediaId=7259159&cdnRoot=http://cdn.abclocal.go.com&webRoot=http://abclocal.go.com&site=

And here are still shots of the photos as they aired in the report:

Thumbnail image for 6 abc Cruise photos.jpgSpecial thanks to Scott Palmer and Scott Nickle at the Phillies and Beth Widhson at Holland America for including me in this project :O)

Earlier this week, there were a few very “minor” signings that occurred.  The Phillies picked up veteran outfielder Freddy Guzman on a Minor League contract.  He will not be invited to Spring Training.  And veteran right-hander Oscar Villarreal was also given Minor League contract on Thursday.  Villareal is coming off Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2009 season.  He was with the Astros in 2008, the Braves from 2006-2007 and the D-Backs three years prior to that.  With many question marks still in the bullpen, another in inexpensive, yet experienced arm hanging around is a good idea.

And if you have not seen it already, check out my report on the new Fantasy Baseball tools from Bloomberg Sports.  The tools are available for pre-order now at mlb.com and will be ready to use on 2/18/10.

So the countdown to Spring Training continues…only 6 days until the truck rolls out and 13 days until pitchers and catchers report!

Cruise Videos, Natural Disasters & Other News

I almost forgot to show everyone my favorite photo from the cruise!  It is me, wearing Ryan Madson’s World Series ring :O)  Ryan was amazing on the cruise; friendly, shaking hands with everyone and chatting away like we were all old buddies.  And he gets extra bonus points for this:3B MISC (2).jpg

If anyone missed my slideshows or Photo Albums from the trip, check out THIS entry for all that fun as well :O)

And now for the video!  The first one is the player introductions from the first day of the cruise, an appearance by the Phanatic and part of movie day, which had a few hitches.  They could not get the movie to play (Phillies 09 Yearbook), so Tom Burgoyne, friend of the Phanatic, took the stage, more than once, to entertain the crowd during the delay:

The next 2 videos are the Q & A session where Greg Luzinski, JC Romero, Shane Victorino, Ryan Madson and Tom/Phanatic answered questions from the fans:

http://www.facebook.com/v/260299527858

And finally, this video is the Farewell cocktail party and dinner.  The players and a few of the wives each spoke to the fans during the party and the dinner consisted of a waiter parade, “rally towels,” “Let’s go Phillies!” chant and the singing of “Take me out to the Ballgame.”

And for those who have been following the earthquake in Haiti, you may be interested to know that right before the quake, our cruise ship was sailing from Grand Turk to Puerto Rico, right past the island, on the eastern most side closer to the Dominican Republic.  DR is the east side of the same island that Haiti is on.  That night, the sea was a bit rough, which may have been an indicator of what was about to hit the area.

In a related story, Jimmy Rollins and his fiancée are currently on the island of Grand Cayman, where an earthquake hit this morning.  They had to evacuate their hotel for a short time but Rollins texted the Phillies to say they were ok and that the wedding, scheduled for 4pm on Saturday, is still on.  If you ask me, there were far too many Phillies far too close to natural disasters this week.

I would like to send my best wishes to Jimmy and Johari; may their wedding go off without a hitch…or an earthquake ;o)  On a more serious note, my thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti.  This terrible tragedy reminds us all that we need to take better care of our planet and all the people in it.  If anyone is able to donate to the cause, please visit UNICEF for details.

One final note regarding Phillies arbitration; Chad Durbin signed a one-year, $2.125 million contract, ensuring he will avoid the hearing next month.  No word yet on whether deals were done with the other 3 eligible players, Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton and Carlos Ruiz.

And if anyone from the former Duck Pond fan group is reading, you will happy to know that your favorite player is back.  Brandon Duckworth signed a minor league deal to bring him back to the Phillies organization.  They also signed Jason Standridge and Nate Bump to similar deals; none of the 3 will be invited to Spring Training, but do not let that stop you from quacking with delight :O)

2010 Phillies Cruise Photo Review

I have arrived home from the Phillies Phantastic Voyage and have sorted through most of my photos.  Joining me on the cruise were 270 Phillies fans, JC & Erin Romero, Shane & Melissa Victorino, Ryan & Sarah Madson, Greg & Jean Luzinski, Scott Palmer, the Phanatic, the friend of the Phanatic, Tom Burgoyne and his wife and Phillies Sales Manager, Scott Nickle and his wife, Jenny.  Everyone had a blast!

I put together a slide show of some key moments from the trip as well as some island shots.  In addition, there are also Photos Albums which include these photos plus many more.  I put together a Phillies Events album and also an Island Events album, which is non-baseball in nature.  Click on either name to view each album.

To view the Photo Slideshow CLICK HERE and it will take you to the video.

Also, J-Roll Smurf Jr. decided to hop in my suitcase before I left and joined me on the cruise.  I put together a slideshow of his high seas adventure HERE.

As you can see, everyone, even the Smurf, had a great time.  I will be posting video later today or tomorrow in addition to the photo slideshows where you will get to listen to the players talk during the Q&A session and the cocktail parties, plus much more!

A few other notes; while I was away, Scott Eyre announced his retirement.  He will be missed :O(  I wish Scott the best in his future endeavors!

Next up, Brad Lidge had knee surgery…again.  He had some loose bodies and debris removed and is expected to make a full recovery within 2-3 weeks.  No word on whether he will be ready for opening day or not.

This past Friday, four players filed for arbitration; Joe Blanton, Carlos Ruiz, Chad Durbin and Shane Victorino.  Really all this means is they will negotiate their salaries with the team and if no consensus is reached, they will have a hearing to decide the amount next month.  Last year, the Phillies avoided arbitration with all 10 players who filed.

Next I would like to address a question I was asked a few times while I was away in regards to JC Romero and his arm surgery.  JC is recovering well; he looked healthy and happy all week on the cruise.  As for his recovery time, it is too soon to tell.  Until he begins a regular throwing routine to see how the arm reacts, it will be difficult to make any educated guesses.  However, when he had the surgery in October, he was given a 5-6 month recovery window.  This means he likely will not be ready until after the season begins.  But as with most injuries and surgeries, anything is possible.

And finally, if anyone missed my on-board cruise updates, feel free to check those out as well.  Here is Update #1, Update #2 and Update #3.

Phillies Cruise 2010 Update #3

It is day 6 of the Phillies Phantastic Voyage and we are sailing around the Caribbean on our way to the Bahamas.  Yesterday, after a sunny day on the island of St. Thomas, the Phillies group engaged in a trivia competition.  Here are a few of the questions we were asked…see how many you can answer!  I will post the answers at the end of this entry.

1.     How many times in his Phillies career did Steve Carlton strike out 300 batters or more in a single season?

2.     What 3 team names have the current Phillies team gone by?

3.     Which Phillies pitcher struck out 300 batters or more in a season, 2 seasons in a row?

Today the Phillies held the autograph session for the fans.  Shane Victorino, Greg Luzinski, Tom Burgoyne (Phanatic’s friend), Ryan Madson, Scott Palmer (broadcaster) and JC Romero all signed:

At the end of the autograph line, a few of the AAA reps, Holland America staff and JC’s wife Erin got in line to get autographs for themselves.  When Erin Romero reached JC who was at the end of the autograph line, she handed her husband several items to sign.  In the photos below, you will see her handing him a head shot to sign.  After that, he leans forward to sign HER instead.  Her reaction is in the photo below:JC and Erin

JC & Erin are not only the cutest couple, they are super nice and lots of fun.  We have all been blessed to have them aboard with us :o)

And here are a few photos of what I have been up to besides the baseball stuff.  The photo to the left is the rainforest in Puerto Rico (El Yunque); then you will see a close-up shot of an iguana and a photo of me and two others preparing to scuba dive in St. Thomas:Cruisesights

That is all for now!  More photos and video are to come…tomorrow we are in the Bahamas and then Saturday we are heading home.  Talk to you all again soon!

Phillies Cruise 2010 Update #2

As the Phillies Phantastic Voyage continues, we are currently on our way to San Juan, Puerto Rico.  On Sunday, each Phillies fan was treated to a photo session and Q&A with the players.  Everyone had a group photo taken and then individuals with each person which included JC Romero, Ryan Madson, Shane Victorino, Greg Luzinski, Scott Palmer (broadcaster) and the Friend of the Phanatic, Tom Burgoyne.

Here are some photos of the guys getting ready for photos:

Thumbnail image for photo session.jpg
After the pictures were done, everyone sat down for a question and answer session.  Some of the questions people asked were a bit surprising.  For instance, one person asked Shane why he had a tendency to swing at the first pitch.  Ryan Madson interjected some humor by saying Shane was stepping to the plate already down with an 0-2 count ;o)  Ryan later gave his opinions on how umpires should be “sent to the minors” just like players when they perform badly.  Funny stuff…

I will post video of the Q&A and a few other events once I get home.  For now, here are some photos of the Q&A session.  The one with the jersey in mid-air is my favorite.  They were raffling off a Victorino jersey and JC was not so impressed; he tossed the jersey on the floor behind him!

Q&A.jpg
Yesterday, we all gathered for a screening of the Phillies 2009 Video Yearbook.  Due to a technical issue with the ships DVD player, there were a few breaks in the action.  Tom Burgoyne was gracious enough to hop on stage and entertain the crowd during the pauses.  He even performed the Phanatic belly roll for us, sans costume.  Again, I will post video when I get home.

Later that evening, a bunch of us sat down to watch magician James Cielen perform.  The show was outstanding and included some Phillies fun as well.  JC, Shane and their wives were sitting in the front row when Mr. Cielen brought two toy poodles on stage to help with some of his magic.  At one point, the magician picked up a dog, pointed him at the front row and, I assume using a water pistol, made the dog appear to pee on the JC, Shane and their wives.  Mr. Cielen then ran off the stage and wiped them all off with a silk scarf, although it looked more like he was trying to buff the top of JC’s head.  Everyone had a nice laugh over that.  These guys all have great senses of humor and enjoyed the prank.  In fact, at the end of the show, Shane was the first person out of his seat to give Mr. Cielen a standing ovation.

So today we will land in San Juan and I will go explore the rainforest :O)  Tomorrow night, we will have a Phillies Trivia event and then on Thursday, the players will sign autographs for us.  I will post another update when I get a chance.

Phillies Cruise 2010 Update

It is the middle of day 2 in our Phillies Phantastic Voyage and so far, it has been an adventure.  Leaving Fort Lauderdale yesterday we ran into some “weather” and rather bumpy seas right at the beginning of the Phillies cocktail party.  JC Romero, Ryan Madson and Greg Luzinski did not seem bothered by the rocking, but poor Shane Victorino got sea sick and only stayed at the party for a few minutes.

So while Shane and a few other guests tried out a new shade of green, the rest of us held on to anything stationary, trying to remain upright.  But that did not impede the fun; Ryan, JC and Greg worked the crowd like pros and chatted with the fans.  Ryan especially seems thrilled to be there after hearing from JC what a great time we all had last year.  Here are a few photos:  Shane is sporting a beard!  Then you will see Greg, Ryan, me with JC and the Phanatic:Cruise1.jpg

The only bummer on the day was learning that Matt Stairs was unable to join us :O(  Matt was offered a minor league contract to stay with the Phillies but has decided to pursue options with other clubs in order to sign again in the majors.  Matt is well loved in Philly and he will be missed dearly, not only on the cruise this week, but in 2010.  I wish him the best of luck in his search!

More photos here…Ryan with Scott Palmer, Shane at the bar before taking ill, me chatting with Erin Romero and you can see Ryan in the background and Ryan, JC and Scott talking to the fans:

Cruise2.jpg
Later this afternoon, we will have our official photo session with the players and then a Q&A with them as well.  Tomorrow, we are off to Grand Turk!  Got to run and get back to my vacation now :O)  Talk to you all again soon!

2010 Phillies Cruise Preview

The countdown has begun!  Only 2 days until the Phillies Phantastic Cruise sets sail for the Caribbean.  Joining us on board will be JC Romero, Shane Victorino, Ryan Madson, Matt Stairs, the Phanatic, former Phillie Greg “The Bull” Luzinski and broadcaster Scott Palmer.  I went on the cruise last year as well and it was a blast!  Sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, this year we will be stopping at Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Bahamas.

The Phillies events will include photo and autograph sessions, Q&A session, cocktail parties with the Phillies players and more!  Here is the video slideshow I put together of last year’s cruise:

Larry Andersen went with us last year but was unable to attend this time around.  He told me a few months back that he had a lot going on this month, not the least of which is Phillies Phantasy Camp where he will spend an entire week.  We will miss him!

While I am away, I will try to post updates and photos as the cruise progresses and as time allows.  If anyone else is going, feel free to drop me an email and let me know or just track me down on the boat and say hello!

Phillies Cruise Photos & Video

Hello!  Well, I still haven’t unpacked, but I did put together a photo slideshow for you and one video.  My priorities are totally in order :O)  Click HERE to view the Slideshow.

And here is the video of Shane Victorino calling Charlie Manuel from the ship; all the Phillies fans sung Happy Birthday to him…

I have more video to upload but it will be a few days at least until I get to that.  But it is the off-season; what else do we have to do?? :O)

Phillies Cruise – Going Home

*Sigh!*  Sad to report that we are all on our way home….some quicker than others.  I will be sitting on the floor of this airport for many, many hours before heading back to Philly.  So, while I am here I thought I would give you all an update on the last few days of the cruise.

We had the autograph session yesterday where everyone participated, even Scott Palmer :O)  Shane looked like he was not feeling well and later, missed the final cocktail party as a result.  He was at dinner so I assume he is doing fine.  Anyway, I got a few World Series balls signed and a whole bunch of my pictures to add to my collection (I have a whole binder full of 5×7 shots that I took and later got them signed).  DSCF0625 Andersen.jpgWe had some very old Halloween masks of Larry Andersen’s face with us which was a promotion way back in 1985 at a game.  I had Larry sign a few of them and then gave him 2 to keep.  Also gave away a few others to some new friends we met on-board.  Everyone got a big kick out of them; Shane even tried one on.  Here is a photo of Larry holding what he called his “twin.”

Later, at the farewell cocktail party, I had a very nice, long conversation with JC Romero’s wife (hi Erin!).  She is just one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.  I told her about my horror at how MLB handled the steroid allegations and she spoke to me about that for a while.  Without revealing too many details, I can say that she and JC feel they have nothing to hide and she even said JC was hoping someone would have asked him about it at the Q&A so he could respond.  We both agreed that she & I were mostly of the opposite mind – I was really hoping no one bothered him about it :O)  But Erin was gracious in speaking with me and I will hold that confidence.  So sorry, no BIG scoop here except to say that JC has done nothing wrong (which I knew anyway).  There is currently a website HERE that gives the detail of the suspension and why it should be lifted.  PLEASE visit the site and sign the petition!  Once you read it, you will see that JC asked permission to take the supplement and was told by both his trainer and MLBPA (players association) that it was ok to take.  They had NO right to do this to him.  Please let your voice be heard!!  Here is one more I found…Petition for JC.  Sign both!

So later at dinner, Larry went around to ALL the tables with Phillies fans and took photos of the people at each table.  I guess he is making a scrapbook of us all…how cute!  And all the fans cheered again at the end of dinner, “Let’s Go Phillies!”  Lots of fun :O)

Well, as promised more photos and video to follow!  I will get to work as soon as I get home.  Feel free to e-mail me anytime or comment below.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
