Ring Ceremony Photos & News

As promised I have put together a Photo Album from the World Series Ring Ceremony!  You can see all the players, plus a few coaches getting their rings.  The quality is a tad lower than I normally like, but I was VERY far away when shooting these…thank goodness for ZOOM lenses :O)  I have also included shots from the miraculous 12-11 come from behind victory over the Braves that occurred after the ceremony.

There have been some questions recently about whether 2008 first-time Major Leaguers like
P2264190 Cervenak.jpgMike Cervenak, Andy Tracy and Lou Marson would be receiving a World Series Ring, since their names were not announced at yesterday’s ceremony.  I can tell you that I have received confirmation from Cervenak’s agent that he will receive his ring tonight!  I can only assume from this that the other players mentioned, plus possibly TJ Bohn, Brad Harman and a few others, may also be getting a ring.  It was my thought that anyone who was on the roster in 2008 and played in a game should qualify, so I am very happy to hear that this should be the case.  Congrats to all and best of luck to the Iron Pigs, who will open their season tonight with Kyle Kendrick on the mound!

I have a few other fun photos to share with you; if you were unable to pick up a copy of the Phillies 1st 2009 Official Magazine, here is what you missed:

A cover spread of 12 of our World Champions in Tuxedos:

And then most of the World Series Team, all dressed up, in a centerfold.  I took the book apart and scanned the images, fitting them together at the center with a little help from Photoshop; even still, they managed to cut part of Charlie Manuel’s head off, plus part of the trophy, in the middle.  Fixed the trophy (it’s magic!), but left Manuel’s head alone :O)

Every player had a different and unique reaction to seeing their World Series Rings; Brad Lidge testified that he would sleep with his; Jamie Moyer noted that his was a bit large, but that he would grow into it; And Cole Hamels…well, see for yourself:

My, oh my, that boy is seriously whipped.  Oh sorry, what I meant to say was, how cute is it that Cole loves his wife SO much ;O)  Yeah, that’s it….

The Phillies are on their way to Colorado!  Game 1 of the series with the Rockies will air at 4:10pm tomorrow with Mr. Hamels on the mound in his season debut.

Phillies Walk Away With Rings And The Win

I suppose I had better run out and buy a lottery ticket.  Yesterday, I predicted that Phillies would need to score exactly 12 runs to win today’s game; the final score?  Phillies 12, Braves 11.  Yes, all bow to the great, powerful and all-knowing Jenn; she is a genius.  ;O)  Now, in order for my prediction to be totally accurate, the score had to be 12-11 thus, necessitating 12 total runs for the Phillies.  But by the 9th inning, the score was 12-10 and Brad Lidge was in to close the game; after 1 out was recorded,  I told the guy next to me that Lidge was about to give up a home run to make the final score 12-11 and BAM!  Matt Diaz sent Lidge’s offering over the left field wall.  Lidge got Garrett Anderson out swinging and voila!  Clearly, I am psychic. ;O)

And yet, this off-the-wall foretelling was not the strangest thing to happen today.  The Phillies were losing the game 10-3 by the seventh inning stretch.  Shane Victorino started the bottom of the 7th by grounding out and it looked like that might me the nail in the coffin for the Phils.  Apparently not.  A series of small miracles occurred for the Phillies starting with a Chase Utley bloop single that fell into no-man’s land and then Ryan Howard was hit by a pitch.  After that, the weirdest string of event I have even personally witnessed in a game, turned a 10-3 deficit into an 11-10 lead.  The Braves bullpen helped out with 5 walks plus the Howard hit-by-pitch; 4 runs scored off those walks.  The other 4 runs were the result of 3 singles and a fielder’s choice.  The Phillies advanced slowly along the base path in 90 foot increments until all 8 runs were in and the inning ended on a Jayson Werth fly ball.  Several words come to mind here:  Unbelievable; incredible; mind-boggling; implausible.  Call it what you will, but in the end, it is the greatest come from behind victory I have ever had the pleasure to witness.

Here are a few game shots; Raul Ibanez scores as Chris Coste tells him not to slide; Rollins tries to knock Feliz in; Utley makes a running grab:040809.jpg

Perhaps the donning of the World Series rings prior to the game had a bit to do with the unorthodox come-back win?  The biggest ring I have ever seen holds 3.84 karats of diamonds; 103 in total, to represent the Phillies 2008 win total.  The base is 14-kt white gold crowned with a Ruby inlay, topped with the Phillies “P” logo.  Take a look:

Each player was called up one by one to receive their ring, including ex-Phillies Pat Burrell, Geoff Jenkins and yes, even Adam Eaton.  Burrell received a huge ovation and Pat Gillick, formerly known here as Grumpy Gillick, broke down and cried as he hugged Burrell.  Jenkins received a warm welcome also but Eaton was booed mercilessly with chants of “Give us our money back!” heard around the stadium.  Taking it in stride and obviously expecting the greeting, Eaton smiled and waved both arms around in the air in a sarcastic and unaffected manner.  Below, you will see Eaton waving to the crowd; Burrell & Gillick hugging; Chase Utley getting his ring:

In the next few days, I will put together a photo album with all the Ring Ceremony pictures and a few shots from the game and post it.  I have pictures of ALL the players getting their rings!  Right now, I need to get some sleep :O)  But stay tuned!  More to come…

And now for the Photo(s) of the Day; Shane Victorino was goofing around during his pre-inning catch with Ibanez and nearly whacked himself with the ball in, um, well…I think the picture tells the story:

Off day tommorow; Phillies take on the Rockies Friday at 4:10pm EST.

Ring Em’ Up!

Ok, I get it.  The Phillies are simply refusing to play ball until they have their World Series rings in hand.  That explains why they have dropped the first 2 games of the year to the Braves.  But do not fret Phillies fans; the World Series Ring Ceremony takes place before tomorrow’s final game of the series.  Once they see those rings, I promise, a 12 run barrage will ensue…let’s just hope it is off the Phils’ bats, not the Braves.

The Braves’ starting pitcher, Jair Jergens, oh sorry, I mean Jurrjens, was a slippery sucker today.  He must have had a little something extra on those pitches as the Phillies kept watching them slide on by.

Th

e Phillies managed only 4 hits off the righty; 3 of those hits came with 2 outs which did not give them many opportunities to score.

Jamie Moyer and gang, on the other hand, could have used some lotion in the crispy, cold April air.  The way they handled the ball on defense made them look like they were suffering from severe chapped hands, as balls rolled past them or ricocheted off their gloves.  Moyer P5039495 Utley.jpgwas nearly frozen solid on the mound and made it through only 5 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks.

The bats looked heavy today; Ryan Howard did get 2 hits, but with 2 outs and no one on base.  2 other times, with men on, he hit into the Howard shift to end the threat.  Chase Utley met a similar fate as both his hits came with 2 outs and no one on base.  Utley also committed an error in the field, no doubt, due to his dry, chapped and Jergens free hands ;O)

So, during this “dry” spell, why not enjoy a good laugh.  This one always helps me:

And if that doesn’t work, join me at the ball park tomorrow for the Ring Ceremony!  Festivities begin at 2:15pm; game time 3:05pm.  See you there!
