2010 Phillies Cruise Preview

The countdown has begun!  Only 2 days until the Phillies Phantastic Cruise sets sail for the Caribbean.  Joining us on board will be JC Romero, Shane Victorino, Ryan Madson, Matt Stairs, the Phanatic, former Phillie Greg “The Bull” Luzinski and broadcaster Scott Palmer.  I went on the cruise last year as well and it was a blast!  Sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, this year we will be stopping at Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Bahamas.

The Phillies events will include photo and autograph sessions, Q&A session, cocktail parties with the Phillies players and more!  Here is the video slideshow I put together of last year’s cruise:

Larry Andersen went with us last year but was unable to attend this time around.  He told me a few months back that he had a lot going on this month, not the least of which is Phillies Phantasy Camp where he will spend an entire week.  We will miss him!

While I am away, I will try to post updates and photos as the cruise progresses and as time allows.  If anyone else is going, feel free to drop me an email and let me know or just track me down on the boat and say hello!

Moyer & Martinez: Together Again

Fate or coincidence?  If you ask me, lightning (or rain in this case) does not tend to strike twice unless it means it.  For the second home start in a row for Pedro, Mother Nature intervened to bring Pedro Martinez and Jamie Moyer together once more.  Martinez only notched 2 scoreless innings against the Braves before the storm came and then he had to sit through not one, but two rain delays.  He almost made it to the mound after the 1st delay, but only a few minutes later, the rain came again and the umpires called for the tarp again.  By the time the game resumed, Pedro was out and again, Jamie was in.

Moyer went on to pitch 4 1/3 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 5 batters.  I hate to sound like a broken record, but this Martinez-Moyer 5th start duo works.  Obviously some higher power is trying to sell this idea to the Phillies as well.  Fate has intervened yet again and brought the Phillies a win on the strength of this Batman and Robin combo.

Moyer Martinez SH2.jpg
Ryan Howard’s
bat did not hurt the situation either; Howard blasted 2 home runs for 3 RBI in the game plus a double and a walk.  Howard looked like there was nothing he could not hit, rain or no rain.  Pedro Feliz had the only other RBI for the Phillies which came off a single to score Raul Ibanez from third.

Charlie Manuel, the most loyal manager in baseball, sent Ryan Madson out for the 8th inning and Brad Lidge out for the 9th again.  Both pitchers have struggled, especially Lidge who looks like a shell of his former self.  Madson got into trouble in the 8th, loaded the bases and allowed a run to score.  But he worked his way out of the potential disaster and handed the game to Lidge.

With a 4-2 lead, Lidge pitched a clean inning and secured the win for the Phillies.  Do not jump up and down just yet; it has been this type of performance that Lidge has been unable to duplicate all season long.  No one, except maybe Manuel, is convinced yet that this is the end of the Lidge problems, although we all hope that it may be so :O)

Tonight the series will continue with the Braves at 7:05pm.  The match-up of Cliff Lee and Derek Lowe should be an interesting one!

By the way, the Phillies Cruise package that I posted yesterday is still available!  And yes, I will be going!  I also went last year and can attest that is was the BEST vacation ever!  Hanging out with major league players, their families and fellow fans….what could be better?  NOTHING I tell you….nothing.  Join us!

For The Girls…

I hear ya ladies…after I posted a photo of a Hooters girl yesterday at a Spring training game, I received many request from the ladies for some female entertainment.  So, here it is, Phillies-style:

First of all, no Phillie will ever top this photo of former-Phil, Pat Burrell:
Burrell p.jpg

Although, Cole Hamels gave it the college try:

cole_hamels.jpg

And Shane Victorino jumped in on the action during the Phillies Cruise in January:

Shane diving 2.jpg

But the rest of the team seems to be a bit modest.  So, I decided to help them along…meet the Phillie-Dales!  Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins (with a new hair-do), Chad Durbin and Greg Dobbs:

Phillie Dales.jpg

And the scary part is, they probably all look even hotter than that in real life :O)  *Sigh!*

Ok, back to reality!  The Elder, Jamie Moyer started the game today against the Rays; Moyer went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Moyer has looked great all spring.  JA Happ took over in the 6th inning and after the first 2 batters were out, he suddenly gave up a solo home run and a single.  But Happ recovered quickly and got out of the inning with a ground ball.  Happ pitched 3 innings of 1 run ball.  To me, this has been the difference between Happ and Kyle Kendrick or Carlos Carrasco; Happ can make a mistake and move on.  The other two seem emotionally unable to cope.  Chan Ho Park is an experienced veteran who also does not seem shaken easily, so keep an eye on Park as well over these next few weeks.

In the poll I posted yesterday on who will be the Phillies 5th starter, Happ ran away with the contest, getting 100% of the votes.  After Kyle Kendrick’s horrible outing yesterday, this picture is becoming clearer.

The most exciting things that happened offensively for the Phillies in the first 6 innings were Jason Donald getting a walk and Miguel Cairo getting the only hit in those six innings.  After that, Ryan Howard came through with a sac fly with the bases loaded to score the Phillies first run.  The only other offense in the game was a 9th inning home run from Andy Tracy, and the Phils went on to lose 3-2.

WBC Highlights

Team USA lost to Team Venezuela yesterday, but the game really did not mean much; both teams will advance to Round 2 of the Classic.  The other teams who made the cut are Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Japan, Korea and the Netherlands.  Round 2 will begin on Saturday; Rollins and Victorino with Team USA take on JC Romero and Team Puerto Rico at 8pm in Miami.

Spring Training Fan Fest

The Phillies held their annual Fan Fest tonight in Clearwater, FL at Bright House Field.  There was a silent auction, photos with the World Series trophy, game used jersey’s for sale, autographs, a moon bounce and, of course, the Phanatic.  Sorry to report that I missed out on the moon bounce, but I think I can live with that.  I did get autographs from the following Phillies, pictured below from top to bottom, left to right:  Joe Blanton, Eric Bruntlett, Clay Condrey, Chad Durbin, Greg Dobbs and Matt Stairs.

Clay Condrey wandered though the crowd for a minute before the signings…I stopped him and yelled out for him to give me a high five.  He stopped, turned and yelled back, “I gotcha right here!” and slapped me five.  He is a funny guy.  I also spoke to Scott Nickle (Phillies marketing) for a while; he remembered me from the cruise and stopped me to talk.  He is going to try to plan another Phillies Cruise for next year :O)

At the end of the night, the Phillies planned a fireworks display; Brett Myers and Ryan Madson, who were not scheduled to appear, showed up with their families to see the show, along with Chad Durbin’s wife and child.  Here are some shots of the guys on the field playing with the kids.  I love the one of Madson tossing his kid into the air!

We all watched the fireworks and headed out.  I’ll be attending practices over the next few days and will report back on that soon!

Durbin Watch Over; Howard Lone Hold Out

Not that I mind at all watching Chad Durbin, but the wait is over!  The Phillies and Durbin agreed on a one year, 1.635 million dollar contract and fans will be blessed with his adorableness (if I may make up a word here) for at least one more season.  Durbin was the final player to sign instead of going to arbitration, except for Ryan Howard who remains alone in his ambition.  Howard is seeking $18 million; a figure that is off the charts outrageous.  The Phillies offered Howard a generous $14 million which, still riding the high of last year’s $10 million dollar arbitration win, he flatly turned down.  What are your thoughts on the Howard situation?  Should he hold out for more or is he being greedy?  Let me know!

Shane diving.JPGHere is the Photo of the Day for you, which is from the Phillies Cruise a few weeks back.  This was taken by fellow cruise-mate, Amy Pacione who was watching Shane Victorino dive off a small boat in Grand Cayman and captured this image, which I thought was very fun!

If you are looking for more information, photos and videos from the Phillies Phantastic Voyage, look no further.  There are links down the right side of this page to the Photo slideshow, Videos and check my January archives for detailed reviews and stories from the Cruise.

Thanks to everyone for their heartfelt comments on my last blog.  I appreciate everyone’s support and am very happy to be a part of the MLBlogs community.  You guys rock!  Have a great day! :O)

Phillies Cruise Videos

Here is the last of the Phillies Cruise video!  The first 3 are of the Q&A session with Shane Victorino, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski and Tom Burgoyne, friend of the Phanatic; hosted by Scott Palmer.  After that is some video from the Phillies private party on the ship with speeches by many of the players, wives and a few other items of interest including JC Romero playing the bongo drums.  Hope you enjoy!

Phillies Cruise Photos & Video

Hello!  Well, I still haven’t unpacked, but I did put together a photo slideshow for you and one video.  My priorities are totally in order :O)  Click HERE to view the Slideshow.

And here is the video of Shane Victorino calling Charlie Manuel from the ship; all the Phillies fans sung Happy Birthday to him…

I have more video to upload but it will be a few days at least until I get to that.  But it is the off-season; what else do we have to do?? :O)

Phillies Cruise – Going Home

*Sigh!*  Sad to report that we are all on our way home….some quicker than others.  I will be sitting on the floor of this airport for many, many hours before heading back to Philly.  So, while I am here I thought I would give you all an update on the last few days of the cruise.

We had the autograph session yesterday where everyone participated, even Scott Palmer :O)  Shane looked like he was not feeling well and later, missed the final cocktail party as a result.  He was at dinner so I assume he is doing fine.  Anyway, I got a few World Series balls signed and a whole bunch of my pictures to add to my collection (I have a whole binder full of 5×7 shots that I took and later got them signed).  DSCF0625 Andersen.jpgWe had some very old Halloween masks of Larry Andersen’s face with us which was a promotion way back in 1985 at a game.  I had Larry sign a few of them and then gave him 2 to keep.  Also gave away a few others to some new friends we met on-board.  Everyone got a big kick out of them; Shane even tried one on.  Here is a photo of Larry holding what he called his “twin.”

Later, at the farewell cocktail party, I had a very nice, long conversation with JC Romero’s wife (hi Erin!).  She is just one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.  I told her about my horror at how MLB handled the steroid allegations and she spoke to me about that for a while.  Without revealing too many details, I can say that she and JC feel they have nothing to hide and she even said JC was hoping someone would have asked him about it at the Q&A so he could respond.  We both agreed that she & I were mostly of the opposite mind – I was really hoping no one bothered him about it :O)  But Erin was gracious in speaking with me and I will hold that confidence.  So sorry, no BIG scoop here except to say that JC has done nothing wrong (which I knew anyway).  There is currently a website HERE that gives the detail of the suspension and why it should be lifted.  PLEASE visit the site and sign the petition!  Once you read it, you will see that JC asked permission to take the supplement and was told by both his trainer and MLBPA (players association) that it was ok to take.  They had NO right to do this to him.  Please let your voice be heard!!  Here is one more I found…Petition for JC.  Sign both!

So later at dinner, Larry went around to ALL the tables with Phillies fans and took photos of the people at each table.  I guess he is making a scrapbook of us all…how cute!  And all the fans cheered again at the end of dinner, “Let’s Go Phillies!”  Lots of fun :O)

Well, as promised more photos and video to follow!  I will get to work as soon as I get home.  Feel free to e-mail me anytime or comment below.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Phillies Cruise – Victorino Meets a Ray He Can’t Beat

Thumbnail image for P1080617 Romero.jpg
Still floating around the Caribbean with the Phillies; I am pleased to report that JC Romero seems to be unaffected by the breaking news of his alleged steroid use while on-board.  He was wonderful and entertaining during all of the events yesterday.  He even sang to me about the joys of taking pictures during the photo session :O)  JC was gracious in answering questions at the Q&A and I must say, Phillies fans have restored my faith in humanity.  Not one person asked him about the scandal.  I think everyone in the room breathed a collective sigh of relief when the session ended and everyone was in a good mood.  JC later joked around at the cocktail party and signed some autographs.  Shane Victorino gave a wonderful speech about what a great cruise he was having and thanked everyone attending for making it a fun trip.

Victorino also told a story about his frightening encounter with a ray.  Not a Tampa Bay Ray, but an actual sting ray.  I also spoke to a few other people on the same trip and they all relived the horror with me.  As Shane’s group was entering the water, they watched in shock as a man was carried off, leg bleeding heavily, due to a sting ray barb.  Not sure if this made headlines or not, but we were on Grand Cayman Island.  Sources report that Shane turned around and immediately got out of the water.  It sounds like the guy must have stepped on a sleeping ray.  I swam with rays a few days ago in the Bahamas and had no issues so this was surprising.  JC said he was not even going to attempt such an excursion because “they are called sting rays, not ‘come pet me’ rays.”  :O)

I took video of the whole Q&A session yesterday which included all players and Tom, the friend of the Phanatic.  I will post that also when I return.  I also talked to Tom later and asked what he used to do before he was the Phanatic’s “friend.”  He said he was in computer parts sales…not really his cup of tea, as he noted.  Tom is a cutie.  P1080649 Phanatic.jpgHere is a photo of him and Larry Andersen waving their “rally towels” (napkins) at dinner last night:  during the waiters’ parade of the Baked Alaska presentation, all the Phillies fans began chanting, “Let’s Go Phillies!” and waving their napkins around.  It was a testament to the spirit of Phillies fans everywhere.

So now we’re in Mexico…no, I did not drink the water :O)  I did drive an ATV to the Mayan ruins and watched some strange guy tip his vehicle over and bust his leg.  Never a dull moment.

ARowand.jpg
Also, I’d like to say hi to Matthew & Jody….met them yesterday.  Matthew is the Aaron Rowand look-alike I have mentioned, but apparently I am the only one who thinks so :O)  He says no one else mentioned it.  Perhaps I am just still in denial over him leaving for the Giants last year?  Nah!  He really does look like him :O)  See for yourself…

So the autograph session (the official one, anyway) is tomorrow and then back home on Sunday.  Hope you are all enjoying the reports and are taken aback with awe and wonderment that I would actually take the time to do this while on vacation :O)  Ha, ha!  Really, just shows you have no life.  Maybe someday… :O)

Phillies Cruise Update #2

It’s Jenn again, reporting live from the middle of the ocean!  Lots to talk about again today…more Victorino sightings; Phanatic fun; and some sad, depressing news…  I’ll leave the bummer for the end.

So yesterday I was chillin’ (or technically baking) in the on-board Spa Therapy Pool, reserved only for Spa guests and guess who stepped into the pool?  Shane Victorino.  Hee, hee :O)  More fun for me!  Well, I did not say much to him as I know this was a place of relaxation….just asked how his cruise was going.  He said he was having a good time and asked me how I was doing and what I had been up to.  I told him about scuba diving in Turks and all the pretty fishies :O)  Aaron Rowand look-alike dude was in the pool too.  He talked to Shane for quite a while….I left and headed for the headed marble relaxation chairs and Shane joined me a few minutes later.  Oh, sorry no photos…I generally don’t carry a camera into the pool or around the Spa with me :O)  Anyway, that was fun!

Today we got to “Meet The Phanatic.”  He toured the room, harassing people, messing with the kids, re-doing people’s hair, etc…  Ya know, the usual.  Very funny stuff…then everyone had a photo with him.P1079928 Phanatic edit.jpg  Later we have a photo session with all the players, past & present and then a Q&A Session with Tom, friend of the Phanatic and a few others.  I will try to video tape the Q&A and post that when I return.  I will also have a full photo album to post when we get back so everyone can see what went on.

And now for the not so fun news…this morning, everyone on the ship received a copy of an abbreviated version of the New York Times, like we do every morning.  However, this one was special as the back page contained an article on how JC Romero failed a drug test on 8/26 and appealed it so he could play in the Playoffs.  JC was advised he lost the suspension on 9/23 and will be suspended for the first 50 games of the season.  Supposedly, it was the same anabolic steroid that Mark McGuire used.  (although personally, I think the whole thing is BS).  Now, Major League Baseball has known about this for more than 3 months now.  Why exactly would they wait to release the information TODAY, when they know JC is away on a cruise with 200 Phillies fans and cannot defend himself or respond in any way?  MLB has just ruined all of our vacations.  Within 1 hour of the article being distributed I had a guy on the elevator ask me if the Championship was legitimate.  And I gather this will be the tune of the cruise from here on…nothing but harassment from the non-Phillies fans.  And poor JC and his wife.  Will they even come out of their cabin now?  How humiliating for MLB to do this to him in such a public way.  Yes, it would have been public anyway, but NOT like this where he is trapped on boat of 2,000 jerks, like the guy on the elevator, and cannot escape.  And we fans who paid extra money for this event may now be deprived of speaking to JC as a result.  I don’t know if he will be in the Q&A.  I will let you know.  I am disgusted by this on a number of levels.  I do not condone drug use of course (but like I said, I don’t believe it), however, the way MLB handled it is despicable.  MLB had to know exactly where Romero is right now, as they MUST inform a player before going public.  Therefore, they would have attempted to contact him, so they knew full well what they were doing.  Every one of those involved should be ashamed.

I could go on about this for hours, but it is just too depressing.  I will try to post again soon to let you know what happens next.  I hope everyone at home is doing well and I will talk to you soon!
