Phillies Cruise Update #2

It’s Jenn again, reporting live from the middle of the ocean!  Lots to talk about again today…more Victorino sightings; Phanatic fun; and some sad, depressing news…  I’ll leave the bummer for the end.

So yesterday I was chillin’ (or technically baking) in the on-board Spa Therapy Pool, reserved only for Spa guests and guess who stepped into the pool?  Shane Victorino.  Hee, hee :O)  More fun for me!  Well, I did not say much to him as I know this was a place of relaxation….just asked how his cruise was going.  He said he was having a good time and asked me how I was doing and what I had been up to.  I told him about scuba diving in Turks and all the pretty fishies :O)  Aaron Rowand look-alike dude was in the pool too.  He talked to Shane for quite a while….I left and headed for the headed marble relaxation chairs and Shane joined me a few minutes later.  Oh, sorry no photos…I generally don’t carry a camera into the pool or around the Spa with me :O)  Anyway, that was fun!

Today we got to “Meet The Phanatic.”  He toured the room, harassing people, messing with the kids, re-doing people’s hair, etc…  Ya know, the usual.  Very funny stuff…then everyone had a photo with him.P1079928 Phanatic edit.jpg  Later we have a photo session with all the players, past & present and then a Q&A Session with Tom, friend of the Phanatic and a few others.  I will try to video tape the Q&A and post that when I return.  I will also have a full photo album to post when we get back so everyone can see what went on.

And now for the not so fun news…this morning, everyone on the ship received a copy of an abbreviated version of the New York Times, like we do every morning.  However, this one was special as the back page contained an article on how JC Romero failed a drug test on 8/26 and appealed it so he could play in the Playoffs.  JC was advised he lost the suspension on 9/23 and will be suspended for the first 50 games of the season.  Supposedly, it was the same anabolic steroid that Mark McGuire used.  (although personally, I think the whole thing is BS).  Now, Major League Baseball has known about this for more than 3 months now.  Why exactly would they wait to release the information TODAY, when they know JC is away on a cruise with 200 Phillies fans and cannot defend himself or respond in any way?  MLB has just ruined all of our vacations.  Within 1 hour of the article being distributed I had a guy on the elevator ask me if the Championship was legitimate.  And I gather this will be the tune of the cruise from here on…nothing but harassment from the non-Phillies fans.  And poor JC and his wife.  Will they even come out of their cabin now?  How humiliating for MLB to do this to him in such a public way.  Yes, it would have been public anyway, but NOT like this where he is trapped on boat of 2,000 jerks, like the guy on the elevator, and cannot escape.  And we fans who paid extra money for this event may now be deprived of speaking to JC as a result.  I don’t know if he will be in the Q&A.  I will let you know.  I am disgusted by this on a number of levels.  I do not condone drug use of course (but like I said, I don’t believe it), however, the way MLB handled it is despicable.  MLB had to know exactly where Romero is right now, as they MUST inform a player before going public.  Therefore, they would have attempted to contact him, so they knew full well what they were doing.  Every one of those involved should be ashamed.

I could go on about this for hours, but it is just too depressing.  I will try to post again soon to let you know what happens next.  I hope everyone at home is doing well and I will talk to you soon!

Things To Be Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Here are just a few things that Jenn is thankful for this holiday season:

·        BASEBALL!!!

·        Phillies are WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!

·        The Phillies winning has just made Holiday shopping a WHOLE lot easier!

·        Even on crutches, Chase Utley STILL looks good! J

·        And if Utley’s not in sight, I can still ogle at Greg Dobbs or Shane Victorino J

·        Right after New Year’s, I will be going on a week-long cruise with Shane, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski and the Phanatic!!  - you hate me, don’t you?

·        Form fitting baseball pants J

·        Ruben Amaro Jr. is the new GM – he is WAY easier to look at than Pat “Grumpy Face” Gilick

·        Re-runs of the World Championship season on TV this off-season

·        Football – it is the only reason I make it through the baseball off-season without hanging myself from my ceiling fan.

And on a more personal note, I am also thankful for:

Phillies Win A Wet One & J-Roll Smurf Tours The Stadium

Well, I drove through a very scary hail storm and sat through a nearly 2 hour rain delay, but eventually, the Phillies pulled out a win for me.  Jamie Moyer logged another quality start today in this water-logged event, going 6 innings of rain-filled fun and giving up 3 runs.  But the highlight of the day was watching the 45 year old Moyer take out umpire Randy Marsh on his way to second base after a throwing error by the Pirates in the 3rd inning.  And when I say he took him out, I mean seriously, he pushed with both arms and THREW the man to the ground to get him out of his way!  And then another throwing error on the same play landed Moyer on third base.  The next batter, Jimmy Rollins, hit a sac fly to left to score Moyer who exhaustedly ran straight from home plate and directly into the dugout to sit down.  After the game, Moyer joked, “There was no oxygen on first or second.  They had the oxygen tank at third.”

P8107515 utley dobbs cr.jpgAnother highlight tonight was watching Greg Dobbs break a record that has stood for 95 years when he hit his 21st pinch hit of the season in the 7th inning.  That double scored Carlos Ruiz and tied the game.  Later that inning, Chase Utley hit a 2 run home run to give the Phillies the lead.  And I am sure he felt a lot better, as earlier in the 5th, he hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end that inning.  Speaking of double plays, Eric Bruntlett is still on a roll; in his 0-4 performance tonight, one of those managed to be a double play, all of them were easy ground balls and NONE of them left the infield.  I’ll say it again…PLAY GREG DOBBS!  Geez!  And to make matters worse, Charlie Manuel is batting Bruntlett in front of Ruiz…??  All I can say is, they won today, despite this and thanks to the pinch hit of Dobbs, home run by Utley, and pitching.  But how many more games should we have to overcome this error in judgment?  Just a thought…

And here is the moment you have all been waiting for!  J-Roll Smurf also had a super day at the ballpark, as did everyone who encountered him.  I have never had so many people ask me questions…everyone wanted to know where I got him and how they could get one.  All I can tell you is…E-Bay.  And the clothes are by Build-A-Bear Workshop.  Of course, the players name and number are a “custom” at home job.  J-Roll Smurf got lots of hugs today!  And as I wandered the park, pimping out my stuffie, I took a few PHOTOS J  Below you will see J-Roll Smurf finding things to do during the rain delay, like check out his beloved 2007 NL MVP Award.  In the second photo, he was attempting to save other Smurfs from a blue, fluffy death in those plastic tubs…I explained the joys of cotton candy to him, and he felt better…

Finally, the rain ended, and it was on to the game where J-Roll Smurf helped to keep score.  He was very excited to see the Phillies win today and even participated in the wave as it rounded the stadium.

If you would like to see the rest of J-Roll Smurfs tour of the stadium, please CLICK HERE to go to my photobucket page and see what other mischief he got into.  There were a few odd incidents with ketchup packets, strangers on elevators and romp in the fluff with multiple Phanatic stuffies…  Worth a look
J

Well, that’s all for now!  Oh, FYI…the Alumni Batting Challenge was cancelled today due to the rain, in case anyone was unaware, thus no photos of that.  I know, bummer :o(  Anyway, on to LA to face the Dodgers…10:10pm EST tomorrow…yuck!  We are in for some late nights here….Go Phillies!

Phillies Lose Another One / Marzano Dies Way Too Soon

Well, let’s just get the Phillies icky loss out of the way here.  Can we just play Chase Utley & Greg Dobbs?  Like Iron Man baseball?  It certainly would be aesthetically more pleasing to watch :o)  Ok, maybe toss in Chris Coste for a few at bats too…  Then, according to last night’s stats, we’d be batting a .571!  I’ll take it!  Everyone else combined, MINUS the pitchers (yes, I excluded their stats to be fair) batted a .120 last night.  Although Eric Bruntlett did have a very entertaining 8 plus minute at bat for a walk…  But geez, what is up with this team already?  Yuck!  Let’s hope they can at least salvage one game of the series tonight.  I’ll be sitting behind home plate with my fingers crossed and trying not to pull my hair out!

Sad, sad news yesterday.  John Marzano passed away at the very young age of 45, possibly from a heart attack.  Not much has been revealed yet.  John was a native of Philadelphia, ex-major leaguer, a great broadcaster, fellow Italian, and a really friendly, energetic guy.  My heart goes out to his family and friends as he leaves behind a wife, 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren.  How awful for all of them.  Very sad and shocking is all I can say.  I remember seeing John on the field last year after the 9/30/07 NL East win jumping up and down, celebrating with the Phanatic, waving to the fans…he was as excited as a child on Christmas morning getting his favorite toy.  Maybe more so.  You could tell that, as a Philly boy, that was something he had waited a very long time to see and to be a part of.  He had spoken many times before about how in his career, he wished he had gotten a chance to play for the Phillies.  So you know that had to be a special moment for him and I am so glad that he was there.  I actually had that thought as I watched him celebrate on the field that day and decided I should take a few pictures of him.  And in his memory, here is a photo collage I put together of some of the photos I took that day:
