Ibanez Rocks New York

Raul Ibanez brought the pain to the New York Mets last night with a 3-run shot into the bullpen in the 10th inning.  The Phillies win the series in New York, 2 games to 1 and come home with a 7-3 record on this most recent road trip.

Ibanez has been the biggest surprise of the year for this team, bringing the defense to match his offense.  In the 4th, Ibanez played a hot shot off the wall and nailed David Wright at 2nd who was trying for a double.  From all the way back on the warning track, not only did Ibanez get the ball to Chase Utley without a hop, he placed the toss perfectly so Utley could make an easy tag.
Thumbnail image for Ibanez Hulk.jpgThis guy has been like the Incredible Hulk for the Phillies (or the Ibanez Hulk), tossing opponents around as if they were small woodland creatures instead of professional ball players.  While leading the majors with 58 RBI’s, slugging percentage (.674) and he is also second in homers with 21, Ibanez has put this team on his back and intends to carry them to the promise land.  Could chants of “MVP!” from the fans at the ball park be far behind?  Just wait; it’s coming.

And the starting pitching continues to improve as well.  Jamie Moyer had another quality start against the Mets, going 6 innings with 3 runs on 8 hits and did not walk anyone.  He looked a bit frustrated at times, but he is the master at buckling down and getting it done.  The bullpen had another great outing too.  Clay Condrey continues to turn heads with his 2.27 ERA and last night he pitched 2 scoreless and hitless innings.  Chad Durbin and Scott Eyre took care of business in the 9th and Ryan Madson saved the game in the 10th.

But just when everything is about to click….the Phillies are getting ready to butt heads with the Boston Red Sox who are coming off a 3-game sweep of the Yankees.  The Phillies have been extraordinarily bad in inter league play historically; will 2009 be different?  Or will the Sox derail the train in Philly?  We shall see…

Save A Pet

Thumbnail image for utley_150x180.jpgIf you are going to the game tonight, stop by the Save A Pet charity booth which will be located at the first base gate and run by the Phillies Wives.  You can adopt an animal in need, donate toys and blankets, and/or purchase a calendar for which the proceeds go to benefit the SPCA.  Phillies players were photographed with either their own animals or adoptable pets from the SPCA and the result is a very adorable calendar.  You can also
buy the calendar online if you are not able to get to the game.  I may need to get about 10 copies… :O)

“Minor” Steroid Issue

Pablo Ozuna signed a Minor League contract with the Phillies on Jan. 22 and has since been playing 2nd base for the AAA Iron Pigs.  Yesterday, he was suspended 50 games for violating the league’s drug policy with an elevated testosterone level.  Prior to this year, he spent a short time with the Dodgers in 2008 and 3 years with the White Sox before that.  The Phillies are the 5th team he has played for.

Outta Here!

Many baseballs left the ballpark today, as well as many players.  Marcus Giles, who batted only .167 this spring, was given his release today.  This was the best option for Giles who would not see a lot of action in the minors; this way, he has a chance to move on to another team.  P2222389 Mayberry.jpgJohn Mayberry Jr. and Carlos Carrasco were both optioned back to the minors.  Mayberry started off hot in camp this year, but struggled as the pitching became more difficult.  He needs some more work to be big league ready, as does Carrasco.  Three other players were told officially they would not make the team’s 25-man roster, but they will stay with the Phils until Saturday to give Charlie Manuel a few more options during the On Deck Series.  The three players are Philadelphia native, Mike Koplove, RHP; 2nd baseman Pablo Ozuna; and outfielder Jason Ellison.

This leaves Miguel Cairo as the only extra right-handed bat, unless a trade is pulled off in the next few weeks.  Cairo has not hit as well as Ozuna this spring, but he can play multiple positions and has a great deal of experience.  Also, the Phillies are required to release Cairo if he does not make the 25-man roster, which may play into the decision.  Rumor has it also that Matt Stairs and Geoff Jenkins are up for grabs; however, the Phillies are going to have a hard time getting rid of either as Stairs is nearing retirement and Jenkins is well over-paid.

Also still up in the air is the 5th starter’s spot.  Chan Ho Park has made this a very difficult decision; today he pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and only 1 earned run.  Park also struck out 7 and now has an ERA of 2.53 in 21 1/3 innings.  Lefty JA Happ currently stands at 20 innings with a 3.15 ERA.  Things being fairly even, Happ is still the best choice to start as Park has a proven track record as a reliever and Happ is not so comfortable in that role.  Plus with the addition of lefty Jack Taschner, there is less need for Happ, also a lefty, in the pen.  Park would be horribly disappointed in the decision if it goes that way, especially since he gave up pitching in the WBC this year, so does his mental status play into this as well?  That remains to be seen…

The Phillies bats are heating up in preparation for Opening Night as evidenced by four home runs today from Jimmy Rollins, Eric Bruntlett, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz.

7 of the Phillies 13 runs in the 13-3 victory over the Astros came off the long ball.  And Bruntlett in particular had a fun day against his former team, going  3 for 4 with 4 RBI.  With all this power unleashed, it makes you wish these guys would save a bit for the real thing.  Only 6 days left!

Brett Myers, now scheduled to start on opening day, will pitch tomorrow against the Blue Jays at 7:05pm.  Cole Hamels got into a minor league game today and said he felt no discomfort.  Hamels is tentatively scheduled to start with the Phillies on April 10th against the Rockies.

Utley Gets In The Game

CUtley.jpg
Chase Utley
played 4 innings in a minor league Spring training game today and, according to Todd Zolecki, Phillies beat writer, all went well.  Utley went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double.  He reported no pain and says as long as he feels good tomorrow, things are looking up; Utley anticipates being ready for Opening Day.  Phillies fans everywhere are anxious to see the All-Star 2nd baseman back in action!

The rest of the Phillies played in regular grapefruit league action today, beating the Astros by a score of 5-2.  Greg Dobbs drove in 2 runs on 2 hits; Jayson Werth collected 2 RBI on a home run; and Pablo Ozuna led the offense with 3 hits in the game and 1 RBI.

While it was nice to see a steady offensive output, all eyes today were really on Carlos Carrasco, who is trying to make the team as the 5th starter.  Carrasco did his part to impress the team with 3 innings pitched with 1 earned run on 4 hits and a walk.  A pretty decent outing for the young pitcher, who’s ERA stands at 6.30 for the spring so far.  Veteran Chan Ho Park will get his turn tomorrow when the Phillies face ex-Phil, Kyle Loshe and the cardinals tomorrow at 1:05pm.

World Series Trophy Meets Ben Franklin

Trophy.jpg
Earlier today, the World Series Trophy made another stop in the Philly area; it arrived at the feet of Ben Franklin in the Franklin Institute where a crowd of Phillies fans awaited their chance to get an up-close look.  The Phanatic wow’ed the kids and flirted with the girls and Phillies PA announcer, Dan Baker kept the peace; or at least tried to.  Happy to report, most people were well behaved and Baker did not have to spank anyone…I assume he was relieved, but I could be wrong  :O)

I dragged my good friend Kimmie along for the trip and she was a real trooper.  Kimmie, I am pretty sure, does not even know what a baseball looks like.  But as soon as I told her the trophy was made by Tiffany’s, she was eager to line-up and have her photo taken with it :O)  And so, she is now a part of history, whether she likes it or not.  This is the same friend who drew a bit of attention to me in front of Chase Utley as I was waiting for his autograph one day; her job was to take a picture.  But as we got close to him, Kimmie looked around and then asked me, out loud, which one was Chase Utley.  Everyone around looked at us as if we had two heads.   But she is awesome and a true friend; even if she can’t tell a baseball from a shovel.  ;o)

Eaton’s Outta Here

Eaton.jpg

Dumb Luck

The Phillies released Adam Eaton today, still owing him $9.15 million dollars.  No other teams will likely be dumb enough to sign him before he clears waivers, avoiding having to pay his huge, ridiculous contract.  If anyone does pick him up after that, they will only be required to pay the Phillies $400,000.  Ouch.  But what would be more painful, is having to keep Eaton around any longer.

Eaton has got to be the luckiest idiot on the planet; he’s a millionaire, he gets a World Series ring and what did he do for it all?  Nothing.  Perhaps he could teach that trick to a few of us?  It’s the least he can do for the two years of pathetic baseball he pitched for the Phillies fans.  Glad as we are to end the Eaton-era, my question is, who will we pick on now?? :O)

Team USA

A Blue Jays fan asked me at the game on Thursday if Shane Victorino was going to play for Team Hawaii.  No kidding; he was very serious.  I calmly explained to him that Hawaii was part of the United States and that, at that time, only Jimmy Rollins was scheduled to play for Team USA.  I was tempted to see if he had ever heard of the state of Delaware, but was afraid I’d get the “Dela-where?” question.  Canadians are fun.  Anyway, it was announced today that Victorino would play for Team USA after all, replacing Grady Sizemore who is nursing an injury.  Nice of them to include Shane as a real American :O)

Phillies Lose To Reds

The Phils went down to the Reds today, 10-3.  However, the bats are beginning to wake up; Victorino went 2 for 3; Raul Ibanez and Greg Dobbs each went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI apiece; and former LA Dodger, Pablo Ozuna went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.  JC Romero pitched 2 solid innings and Ryan Madson pitched 1 scoreless.  The loss went to rookie Andrew Carpenter who gave up 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks to start the game without recording an out.

The Phillies take on the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow at 1:05pm in a World Series reunion.  Pat Burrell has chosen to make the trip to see his old teammates.  Pictures to come!  The game is sold out and should be the highlight of 2009 Spring Training to date.
