The Phillies were swept by the Dodgers last night in a 4 game series after another great starting pitching performance, wasted once again, by a disgusting offensive output. They lost 3-1 yesterday. Brett Myers can join the support group for Cole Hamels now as he too has been shunned by his teammates who have simply been unable to produce runs for him. Myers went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks and struck out 8 batters. The offense? TWO hits. One from Jayson Werth and one from Chase Utley; the lone run was an RBI on a sac fly from Ryan Howard. Actually, in the entire 4 game series, the Phillies as a unit hit for an average of only .194. That brings their super grand total for the month of August to .206.
So, since I know I am tired of saying the same old thing over and over again, I thought I’d let Merriam-Webster say it for me. Here is the definition of “Offense”, ya know, in case anyone was unclear:
Main Entry: of·fense
Variant(s): or of·fence \ə-ˈfen(t)s, especially for 3 ˈä-ˌfen(t)s, ˈȯ-\
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin offensa, from feminine of offensus, past participle of offendere
Date: 14th century
1 a obsolete : an act of stumbling b archaic : a cause or occasion of sin : STUMBLING BLOCK
2: something that outrages the moral or physical senses
4 a: the act of displeasing or affronting b: the state of being insulted or morally outraged <takes offense at the slightest criticism>
While #3 is of particular interest (SCORING ability), I really think the entire definition applies here, as we are all offended (see #4 – displeased and morally outraged; #2 – more outrage…) by the way these guys have been playing. It is an offense (see #5 – Sin, Misdeed, breech of moral or social code) against the city of Philadelphia and all its fans that we are subjected to this mediocrity.
Now please excuse me while I go find a dark corner and a pillow to scream into… If you see little men with white jackets coming to my house, you’ll know what happened.
