Walk-Off In Extras Nails Series Win for Phillies

The Phillies annual Alumni Weekend came to an end today with a huge series win against the World Champion Cardinals.  The 11-inning, 8-7 walk-off win was the cherry on top of a great weekend at Citizen’s Bank Park.

Vance Worley took the mound again, despite needing elbow surgery for bone chips.  The injury appears to be taking a toll on the Vanimal who struggled again, going 5 1/3 innings with 4 runs allowed.

The Phillies offense started off strong with 3 runs in the 1st on a triple from Chase Utley.  In the 4th, Ryan Howard added a solo homer.  But each time the Phils scored, the Cardinals answered and they took a 4-4 tie into the 8th.

With 3 errors in the game, the Phillies still had some nice defensive plays, and others that fell short.  The play at the plate below where Matt Holiday is called safe was a real bummer:

More disappointment was to follow as Michael Schwimer turned a 4-4 game into a 7-4 deficit for the Phils in the 8th, allowing the 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.

But just when it looked like the game was over, Erik Kratz got up to his new-old tricks again.  With 2 runners on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, he smashed a home run to left to tie the game up again.

But Kratz was not done yet…  In the 11th, he started off the inning with a double.  Sadly, the double was erased when Jimmy Rollins, who had the day off prior pinch hitting in the 8th, hit into a fielder’s choice.  J-Roll later redeemed himself by stealing 3rd, which turned out to be the key to winning the game.  Juan Pierre hustled down the 1st base line to beat out an infield single which scored Rollins for the walk-off win!

Pierre has been one of the few bright spots for the Phillies this year.  It is hard to imagine not resigning him in the offseason, but that drama will play out later…

As for the Alumni in attendance, they had a lot of fun, especially Mike Schmidt who shot hot dogs into the crowd.  You will have to see it to believe it:

There were many other appearances as well, including John Kruk announcing the line-ups,  Dick Allen and Tony Taylor changing bases, and eight former Phillies, including Larry Andersen, Gary Matthews, Ricky Jordan, Ricky Botallico and Von Hayes singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on the field during the seventh-inning stretch.

Botallico, always an amazing sport, even wore the Phanatic’s jersey to entertain the crowd.

2010 Phillies Cruise Preview

The countdown has begun!  Only 2 days until the Phillies Phantastic Cruise sets sail for the Caribbean.  Joining us on board will be JC Romero, Shane Victorino, Ryan Madson, Matt Stairs, the Phanatic, former Phillie Greg “The Bull” Luzinski and broadcaster Scott Palmer.  I went on the cruise last year as well and it was a blast!  Sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, this year we will be stopping at Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Bahamas.

The Phillies events will include photo and autograph sessions, Q&A session, cocktail parties with the Phillies players and more!  Here is the video slideshow I put together of last year’s cruise:

Larry Andersen went with us last year but was unable to attend this time around.  He told me a few months back that he had a lot going on this month, not the least of which is Phillies Phantasy Camp where he will spend an entire week.  We will miss him!

While I am away, I will try to post updates and photos as the cruise progresses and as time allows.  If anyone else is going, feel free to drop me an email and let me know or just track me down on the boat and say hello!

Wolf Devours Phils; Baseball 101 For Women

Since the game against our old pal Randy Wolf and the Dodgers was awful, let’s begin today with something fun!  Here is a recap of the Baseball 101 event for women held before the game yesterday:

P5133337 Werth.jpgThis now twice annual event included a behind the scenes tour, coaching from the Phillies staff, many guest speakers and an appearance by Jayson Werth.  Werth walked into the room and you would have thought it was Tom Cruise, judging from the reaction.  Women screamed and flash bulbs popped.  Werth talked openly to the group of 140 female fans and was surprisingly comical.  He talked about stealing home in Tuesday nights’ win over the Dodgers (turns out, it was all his idea and the 3rd base coach had no clue what was happening); Werth also gave us an overview of what it is like to travel as a Major League player, how he felt at the World Series parade, his baseball heritage and what it means to play as a team.  He was very impressive.

We also heard from Phillies broadcaster, Chris Wheeler, who walked us though his embarrassment of the strange dance he did behind Harry Kalas as he called the World Series win.  Wheels said he had no idea that he had actually looked that nuts until an hour and half later when he saw the replay.  Mitch Williams was also exceptionally informative, and very, very funny.  Williams should be a stand-up comic.  He had the room almost in tears as he discussed how we have not lived until we’ve seen John Kruk naked, how he (Williams) does not wear pants during his broadcasts and a variety of other topics.  And Larry Andersen, another former player and current broadcaster, was equally entertaining with his tales of Kalas and honest expressions of dislike for umpires.

Below, you will see Williams, Andersen and a very surreal moment as well; Tom Burgoyne, friend of the Phanatic, with the Phanatic!  A true “out of body” experience :O)

051309a.jpg

At one point, all the women broke into teams and travelled around the stadium, with stops in the bullpen, the batting cages and on the field to run the bases and work on throwing and fielding with the Phillies coaching staff.  Sam Perlozzo and Davey Lopes directed us on the field; Milt Thompson and Pete Mackanin let us swing away in the cages; and Rich Dubee and Mick Billmeyer let us throw pitches off the mound in the pen.  They gave us the inside scoop, just like we were real major leaguers.  My favorite coach comment of the day came when I asked what changes we could expect to see when JC Romero returns to the team.  Billmeyer chimed in immediately with, “We will get better!”  Well said :O)

And a first for Baseball 101 was the behind the scenes tour of the player areas:  the clubhouse, their kitchen and even the training room.  I can tell you several things from this experience.  First, Chad Durbin has a sweet tooth and likes crossword puzzles; some players seem to have a shoe fetish; Ryan Howard uses the same baby powder that I do; and doing laundry for the Phillies is a very interesting job!  Here are a few sights from the clubhouse:

051309b.jpg
I took tons of photos and was surprised by a few things I saw just “hanging” around.  I heard myself mutter as I peered into lockers, “Is that…(you fill in the blank)???  Oh my, yes it is.”  Use your imagination.  Nothing out of the baseball realm, but still a bit weird to see up close ;O)

P5133432 Moyer.jpg
So after the all-day event which began at 8:45am, we sat down to watch the game which started at 7:05pm.  Sleepy, but it was worth it.  We had a good 3 innings and Jamie Moyer looked like he may knock out every Dodger that faced him, but come the 4th inning, the bottom dropped out and it all went downhill from there.  7 runs allowed in only 4 1/3 innings and Moyer still cannot find his 250th win.  However, I think that was the least of his worries last night.  With the struggles in this starting rotation, I would not be surprised to see some changes very soon.  Charlie Manuel has announced that JA Happ will start one of the games of the double-header on Saturday against the Nats; no word on what will happen after that.  Happ may be pitching that day for his chance to win a spot in the rotation.

On again to more pleasant things:  Here is the Photo Album from my day in baseball-land which includes the photos in this post and more.  And don’t forget to tune in to the game this afternoon, which is an early start of 1:05pm to finish the Dodgers series.  Hoping the Phillies can pull out a winning series!

More Thoughts On Harry

Yesterday was a very emotional day for many of us; and a new day has had little effect.  I began watching the television coverage this morning of Harry Kalas’ passing that I taped yesterday while I was at the game and I have to say, if I see Larry Andersen cry one more time, I do not think I’ll make it.  I finally had to turn the TV off.

I spoke with many friends today about Harry and they all feel the same loss, even those who knew little about him.  I told one friend a story about how Harry let me keep one of his name tags from an event we attended and then even signed it for me as a keepsake.  She then told me that she had a relative who was one of Harry’s doctors and she had him sign a latex-free medical exam glove for her step-father.  Just more proof that Harry would sign or do absolutely anything for a fan.

Later, I began looking at the photo’s I took from the game yesterday.  I had no idea what I had actually shot until today, as most of the game is a blur to me and the camera acted as a simple distraction.  I came across these of Shane Victorino’s home run at-bat; first he points to the outfield, a’la Babe Ruth; then he watches the ball as it flies out of the park; and finally, in a tribute to Harry, Shane points to the press box after he crosses home plate:Victorino HR 041309.jpg

There was a mix of sadness, deep thought and even some joy in remembrance of Harry on the faces of the Phillies yesterday, which is evident in the photos I took.

P4139669.jpg
I put together a Photo Album from the game as usual, and I tried to include a few of the lighter moments as a reminder of Harry’s love of the game.

The Phillies are off today and their scheduled visit to the White House has been postponed indefinitely due to Harry’s passing.  Fans continue to visit Citizens Bank Park where a memorial has begun at the feet of the Mike Schmidt statue with flowers, cards, balls and a variety of mementoes.  Photos of that memorial can be seen at Todd Zolecki’s blog, The Zo Zone.

And finally, I would like to leave you with this video that I shot last May, where Harry addressed a group of women at the Phillies yearly Baseball 101 event.  We are all so fortunate to have shared in Harry’s passion and love of baseball over the years.  I will never forget these moments.

Phillies Cruise Photos & Video

Hello!  Well, I still haven’t unpacked, but I did put together a photo slideshow for you and one video.  My priorities are totally in order :O)  Click HERE to view the Slideshow.

And here is the video of Shane Victorino calling Charlie Manuel from the ship; all the Phillies fans sung Happy Birthday to him…

I have more video to upload but it will be a few days at least until I get to that.  But it is the off-season; what else do we have to do?? :O)

Phillies Cruise – Going Home

*Sigh!*  Sad to report that we are all on our way home….some quicker than others.  I will be sitting on the floor of this airport for many, many hours before heading back to Philly.  So, while I am here I thought I would give you all an update on the last few days of the cruise.

We had the autograph session yesterday where everyone participated, even Scott Palmer :O)  Shane looked like he was not feeling well and later, missed the final cocktail party as a result.  He was at dinner so I assume he is doing fine.  Anyway, I got a few World Series balls signed and a whole bunch of my pictures to add to my collection (I have a whole binder full of 5×7 shots that I took and later got them signed).  DSCF0625 Andersen.jpgWe had some very old Halloween masks of Larry Andersen’s face with us which was a promotion way back in 1985 at a game.  I had Larry sign a few of them and then gave him 2 to keep.  Also gave away a few others to some new friends we met on-board.  Everyone got a big kick out of them; Shane even tried one on.  Here is a photo of Larry holding what he called his “twin.”

Later, at the farewell cocktail party, I had a very nice, long conversation with JC Romero’s wife (hi Erin!).  She is just one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.  I told her about my horror at how MLB handled the steroid allegations and she spoke to me about that for a while.  Without revealing too many details, I can say that she and JC feel they have nothing to hide and she even said JC was hoping someone would have asked him about it at the Q&A so he could respond.  We both agreed that she & I were mostly of the opposite mind – I was really hoping no one bothered him about it :O)  But Erin was gracious in speaking with me and I will hold that confidence.  So sorry, no BIG scoop here except to say that JC has done nothing wrong (which I knew anyway).  There is currently a website HERE that gives the detail of the suspension and why it should be lifted.  PLEASE visit the site and sign the petition!  Once you read it, you will see that JC asked permission to take the supplement and was told by both his trainer and MLBPA (players association) that it was ok to take.  They had NO right to do this to him.  Please let your voice be heard!!  Here is one more I found…Petition for JC.  Sign both!

So later at dinner, Larry went around to ALL the tables with Phillies fans and took photos of the people at each table.  I guess he is making a scrapbook of us all…how cute!  And all the fans cheered again at the end of dinner, “Let’s Go Phillies!”  Lots of fun :O)

Well, as promised more photos and video to follow!  I will get to work as soon as I get home.  Feel free to e-mail me anytime or comment below.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Phillies Cruise On-Board Update

Hey everyone!  I am on board the ms Westerdam with Shane Victorino, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski, Scott Palmer and the Phanatic!.  We are currently docked in the Bahamas :O)  It’s only Day 2 and a LOT has happened so far!  Here we go:

I took pictures with everyone but Shane yesterday at the welcome party, but I did get a photo with his wife :O)  Or fiancée?  Not sure if they tied the knot yet.  Anyway, I had better things to do with Shane…tell ya that shortly.  LA was drinking and then jokingly telling people he quit drinking (yeah, since the last time he sat his glass down).  He asked me after we took a photo if it was ok that he was holding a glass of champagne in the photo…hee!  I assured him I’d have had one also but I ran out.  He quickly found the nearest waiter and pointed at him to fill me up :O)  LA is awesome.  The Bull (Luzinski), JC & Erin Romero, Shane & Melissa and the Phanatic all cruised the room and talked to the fans.

During the intros by Palmer, Shane decided to call Charlie Manuel and have us all wish him a happy birthday.  So, he held his phone up and everyone sang to Charlie.  I have that on video and will post it when I return…very cute!

The highlight of my evening though was hanging out with Shane.  I had spent some time talking to his wife earlier (she is very nice!) and ran into them again at the elevator on the way to dinner.  I rode the elevator with Shane, Melissa, a AAA agent and then inadvertently wound up spending the next 20 minutes walking the ship with them.  We just got to chatting and they seemed happy with  me hanging out as I was not asking for autographs or photos (thus, no photo w/Shane yet…this was way more fun though).

Anyway, we talked about the regulations for flying out of Hawaii, the ship, shopping, etc…  Shane told me this was his first cruise and his wife said he was a bit worried about the motion.  He was happy though that he had not really felt the boat moving.  That was too cute :O)  I told him about a cruise I took to Bermuda where we hit a storm and his eyes got real big.  He said, “No, no don’t tell me that…please, no storms.”  We all had a nice laugh over that.

Then we walked though the gift shop and talked about all the stuff we wanted to buy.  I told his wife I had better not spend much time in there as I was a bit tipsy and might spend too much.  She said, “Well, that’s the problem with him (Shane), he’s not doing that (drinking).”  I told her that was probably a good thing but she then said it wasn’t because he would not be in the mood to shop for her!  Ha!  Shane then told me to feel free to spend my husbands’ money :O)

Next, the AAA lady guided us to a map of the world were the ship’s location was labeled in red lights.  I told Shane it was the “You are here” map and he laughed.  We checked out the map and moved on to the photo area.  The ship people take a photo of you and your significant other / kids / whoever when you board and Shane wanted to buy their photo.  They are all posted on these huge wall-like stand-ups and I helped him & Melissa look for their photo.  We found mine and all agreed it was awful :O)  I was looking off in the distance instead of at the camera!  Not like I really needed one more photo of myself though, ya know?

We all then went into the dining room and Shane was seated only 3 tables away from us with JC and the rest of the crew, so that was nice also.  Today, I saw him on the beach in the Bahamas and he waved and said hello.  So, that is the end of my Victorino adventure!  Do you hate me yet?  Hee!  Anyway, here are some photos from the 2 days so far.  Descriptions are from left to right, top to bottom:

1-Shane smiling and the party, 2- Shane walking by on the beach with a friend, 3- The Phanatic serving hors’dourves, 4- JC and Erin Romero, 5 -Waiting by the elevator with Shane, 6- The Bull chatting at the bar, 7- LA announces the Eagles game score, 8- Is former Phillie Aaron Rowand on this cruise???!!  Damn…no such luck.  But this guy really looks like him!, 9- Shane, Melissa and Scott Palmer, 10- Me, Melissa, AAA lady and Shane checking out the map.Phillies Cruise 09.jpg

Ok, that’s all for now!  I am limited on internet time here so if you have sent me e-mail or comments recently and I did not or do not get back to you right away, I promise I will do so when I return.  I will post more updates as well as soon as I can.  Stay tuned!

Phillies Phantastic Voyage Preview

P2251704 Romero.jpg

In a few days, I will be on my way to join Phillies Shane Victorino, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski and the Phanatic for an 8-day Caribbean cruise!  The cruise is on Holland America’s ms Westerdam leaving Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 1/4/09.  Specially planned Phillies-only events include a photo session, autograph session, Q&A session, screening of the World Series highlight film, meet and greet with the Phanatic, and 3 Phillies cocktail parties.  If any of my readers will also be attending, please drop me a note to let me know.  I’d love to say hello!

And in addition to all the Phillies fun, we will be stopping at the Bahamas, Grand Turk, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico.  I plan to do some scuba diving and check out the Mayan ruins. :O)  I know Shane is a diver as well…maybe he’ll be in the water with me! :O)  One can dream….

So anyway, I will attempt to do a few mini-reports here as the cruise progresses: this will depend upon the reliability of the internet connection aboard the ship.  Fingers crossed!  Either way, I promise to bring back lots of fun photos for you!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone out there reading; you have helped make this blog a huge success!  I love hearing from other Phillies fans so as always, feel free to comment or write to me.  And please, please….Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Strange Baseball Injuries

In part 2 of my off-season “strange baseball” series, I give you the most entertaining baseball injuries of all time:

·         We’ll begin with my personal favorite:  Adam Eaton, when he was with the Padres:  Adam accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife while trying to unwrap a DVD in 2001.  And the Phillies later signed this genius to a three-year deal worth $24 million because…???

·         Relief pitcher, and former Phillie, Larry Anderson strained a rib muscle getting out of a Jacuzzi.  I am guessing because he did not want to sit down his beer first… J

·         John Smoltz burned his chest while ironing a shirt that was ON him at the time.  Who irons clothes while wearing them?  Wow.

·         Chris Brown missed over 250 games between 1984 and 1988 due to supposed injuries.  He once claimed that he slept on his eye wrong and could not play as a result.  He also used the “bruised tooth” excuse once as well.  That’s his story and he’s stickin’ to it.

·         Wade Boggs injured his back while trying to put on cowboy boots; he apparently lost his balance…and his dignity.

·         Aaron Rowand hurt his left shoulder while playing tag with his kids.  Really, I could think of more interesting ways to accomplish this…and it does not involve children. J

·         Glenallen Hill, plagued by nightmares, once fell out of bed and onto a glass table after dreaming that he was covered in spiders.  Serious arachnophobia gone wrong.

·         Bret Barberie missed a game after accidentally rubbing chili juice in his eyes.  A budding chef, no doubt.

·         Kevin Mitchell strained a muscle while vomiting.  No more drinking games for him… J

·         Phil Niekro injured his hand after shaking his hands too hard.  What??

·         Jose Cardenal missed a game in 1972 because he tired.  He said the crickets chirping in his hotel room kept him awake all night. He also missed a game 2 year later after claiming to have slept funny and, as a result, his eyelid was stuck shut.

·         Nolan Ryan was once bitten by a coyote pup that he tried to take home with him after finding two of them wandering the countryside.  Lesson?  Leave Mother Nature alone.

·         Cal Ripken Jr. broke his nose while posing for an All-Star Team photo.  He was “accidentally” elbowed in the face by Roberto Hernandez.

·         Sammy Sosa went into back spasms after sneezing too hard.  Benadryl anyone?

·         Brandon Inge strained his oblique while trying to move a pillow for his son.  Was the pillow made of bricks?

·         Steve Sparks dislocated his shoulder trying to rip a phonebook in half.  The Incredible Hulk would have been impressed.

·         Ricky Henderson missed several games in August of 1985 because of frostbite.  He left an ice pack on his foot a tad too long.  Another genius.

·         Ricky Bones injured his lower back trying to get out of a chair while watching TV in the clubhouse.  A real “bone” head move.

And now for the truly sick and “twisted” – The Bad Balls Club (warning: men should not read if you have a weak stomach) –

·         Felix Pie missed time during 2008 spring training with a twisted testicle.

·         Chris Snyder was on the 15-day DL in July 2008 with a fractured testicle after getting hit with a foul ball.  Foul balls, indeed.

·         And last, but not least, Ken Griffey Jr. missed a game after he pinched his right testicle between his leg and his cup.

Feel free to add your own favorite baseball injuries in the comments section below.  And please, do not try any of these feats at home.
