Offense Stalls In Phillies Loss

Before the game tonight, 3 Phillies players received their Gold Glove awards for 2009; Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco.  Polly’s award was from his time at 2nd base with the Tigers.  The transition to third this year with the Phillies has been no problem, especially where his bat is concerned.  Polanco was hitting at an average of .444 coming into tonight’s game; he was also leading the entire league in hits with 20 and tied for 1st in runs with Chase Utley and the Dodgers Matt Kemp.

JA Happ was also honored tonight; as a rookie in 2009, he came in 2nd place for the Rookie of the Year voting.  But he did receive the rookie award that is voted on by the players, The Players Choice Award for the 2009 National League Outstanding Rookie.

P4137079 JMoyer.jpgFellow starting pitcher, Jamie Moyer, started tonight’s game against the Marlins and got off to a very bad start.  He allowed 5 runs in the first inning, including a Ronny Paulino 3-run bomb.  Paulino was down in the count 1-2 and nailed the cutter that Moyer threw, which was right in his happy hitting place, down and in.

To his credit, Moyer did settle into the game and went 5 more innings without allowing a run, but the damage had been done.  The Phillies are having a lot of issues with their pitching right now as both Moyer and Kyle Kendrick have gotten beaten up in their first 2 starts of the year.  Add to that the bullpen disasters of the last few games and things are getting scary.

On the hitting side, the Phils offense had been unstoppable until tonight.  They had only 5 hits and scored just one run.  Ryan Howard had a big opportunity to bail them out in the 6th inning with 2 outs and the bases loaded, but he grounded out to end the inning.

Bats on fire.jpgRaul Ibanez
is a real issue too; he is hitting a pathetic .179 right now.  Not only is he not hitting, he is causing damage by doing things like hitting into double plays at crucial moments to kill the offensive momentum.  Raul had better try something soon; maybe make a sacrifice to the Gods by burning these obviously cursed bats?  Frankly, I do not care how he finds his Mojo again, as long as he does find it.  And until the curse if lifted, maybe Charlie Manuel should put in Ben Francisco for a while?  Just a thought…

Jayson Werth helped the Phillies avoid the shut-out by hitting a homer in the 9th, his first of the year.  But Ricky Nolasco did pitch a complete game for the Fish and did the job well.  The Phillies lost by a score of 1-5.

The Phillies can still win the series if Cole Hamels keeps his head on straight tomorrow; oh, and finding the strike zone might be good too ;o)  Game time is 1:35pm; if you are going, bundle up, it might be chilly.  I’ll be the one on the first base side wearing 6 layers and shivering like it is January….I hate cold.  So, if I do not turn into an ice cube, I should be back with photo.

Halladay Drowns The Fish

Phillies fans were singing in the rain tonight as Roy Halladay drown the Marlins.  Sprinkles fell throughout most of the game, but had no effect on Halladay’s performance.  He went through 8 innings, allowing just 2 runs and striking out 4 batters.  Halladay’s home debut was exactly what fans had looked forward to seeing, minus the rain, of course.Singin Halladay.jpg

The Phillies offense had another spectacular game as well, scoring 8 runs on 12 hits and 5 walks.  Every position player except Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez collect at least 1 RBI and everyone, except Ibanez, had at least one hit in the game.  Even Halladay knocked a single.  The big fish of the day however, turned out to be Juan Castro; he had 2 hits for 3 RBI while filling in for the injured Jimmy Rollins.

And of course, Chase Utley hit yet another home run, passing Albert Pujols for the most in the National League with 6.  It was also Utley’s 4th game in a row with a homer.  Clearly, Utley is in the zone, where we hope he will stay for a long time.

What looked like an easy win, turned into a near disaster in the 9th inning.  With an 8-2 lead, rookie relief pitcher David Herndon allowed 4 runs on a bunch of ridiculously unlucky dribbling infield hits by the Marlins.  Ryan Madson had to be brought in for the save.  A huge sigh of relief overcame the fan as Madson got the last two outs and the Phils went home with an 8-6 win.  Whew!  Tomorrow, they will start Jamie Moyer, a notorious Fish killer, in the 7:05pm start.

Here is a quick injury update as well: JC Romero made a rehab start for the AAA Iron Pigs tonight and pitched a scoreless inning.  He threw 17 pitches, 13 of which were strikes.  He is inching closer each day to a return to Philly.  This is very good news for a bullpen that appears to be struggling without him.

Starter Joe Blanton threw a bullpen session today and is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for single-A Lakewood on Tuesday.  Kyle Kendrick will continue to fill in as a starter until Blanton returns, despite two very bad outings so far.

Brad Lidge is working towards his return, which looks like it may be at the end of the month.  His pitch speed has improved, but he still has a lot of work to do.  Cross your fingers… ;o)

Kendrick Bombs; Offense Pulls Out The Win

The second game in the series against the Nationals tonight did not start out well.  It was Kyle Kendrick’s second start this year; both starts have been against these Nats.  In his first start, he got beat up pretty good.  Tonight, the Nats completely destroyed him.

Kendrick gave up 3 runs right away in the 1st inning but in the bottom of that same inning, the Phillies bats bailed him out with 4 runs to take the lead.  So what does Kendrick do in the 2nd inning?  He gave up 3 more runs and handed the lead right back.  Kendrick was pulled after only 1 2/3 innings and his ERA soared to a shocking 17.47.

kyle on fire.jpgThe most disturbing part of Kendrick’s start to the season is that both outings were against the Nationals, probably the worst team in the league.  So I have to ask, where is the Kendrick from February and March who gave up only 2 runs in all of spring training?  You may have an easier time finding that pesky Waldo then finding the Kendrick of spring.  Oh wait, I see him…he is being charcoaled on the grill…

But the Nationals could not keep this team down; the Phils took that 2nd inning lead right back from the Nats in their half of the inning, scoring 3 more runs to make it a 7-6 game.  Nelson Figueroa did a great job filling in as the long man, allowing just 1 run in his 3 1/3 innings.  The Phillies bats scored a bunch more runs for him too, lining Figueroa up to be the winning pitcher.  Figueroa went 2 for 2 at the plate as well, with a single and a double.  Chad Durbin pitched 2 scoreless innings after that and Antonio Bastardo took over in the 8th.  David Herndon finished off the 9th; in all, the pen allowed just the one run.

A few of the offensive highlight tonight included 4 hits and 5 RBI from Shane Victorino, who had been struggling at the plate until tonight.  His 7th inning bases clearing, 3-run triple was just what everyone had been waiting to see.  Victorino is batting lead-off now that Jimmy Rollins is on the DL with a calf strain.  J-Roll’s recovery time may be anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

While J-Roll will be sorely missed, the offense did not skip a beat without him tonight.  Wilson Valdez was called up to fill the bench spot.   Juan Castro should do a fine job filling in at shortstop in the meantime, even if his bat is not very impressive; he went 0-4 tonight at the plate.

But the rest of the team is hitting, so all is well.  Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard had 2 hits each and Chase Utley hit 2 home runs in the game; one was a 3-run homer in the 2nd to give the lead back to the Phils and the other was a solo shot into the second deck of right field.  Utley looked more like he was wielding a sledgehammer than a bat.

Utley hammer copy.jpg
So the Phillies walk away with a 14-7 win and still have only had one game this year where they scored fewer than 5 runs in a game.  Tomorrow at 3:05pm, JA Happ will start.  Roy Halladay’s first home start has been moved up to Friday to keep him on his normal rest schedule after Tuesday’s day off.  Jamie Moyer will pitch on Saturday.

Boxing Match or Baseball Game?

The Astros were looking for their first win of the year today against the Phillies.  In the 3rd inning, it looked as though they may just get that win.  Jamie Moyer made it to 2 outs in the 3rd before all hell broke loose.  He took a 4-0 lead and turned it into a 4-5 deficit in the blink of an eye.

Thumbnail image for Moyer boxing.jpgFor a few minutes, many wondered if they were watching a baseball game or a boxing match, as Moyer took blow upon blow from the Astros bats.  With 2 outs in the inning, the right and left hooks began, starting first with the Astros pitcher who whacked a double to get the rally started.  Here is the remainder of the beating, which even included a single from former teammate, Pedro Feliz: 2-run homer, a walk on 4 pitches, 2-run homer (yes, again), 4 singles in a row to score the 5th run of the inning.  It was a total knockout.

Or, maybe not…the Phillies rallied back in the 7th inning and took the lead again on a Ryan Howard 2-run homer.  Howard also tripled and walked with the bases loaded for an RBI earlier in the game.  Shane Victorino, who has been very unlucky of late, finally got in on the action with an RBI single in the 7th.  In the 9th, Victorino hit a 2-run homer to give the Phillies a 9-5 lead.  And then he breathed a sigh of relief…whew!

As for the bullpen, Chad Durbin mowed down the Astros in the 7th inning.  Danys Baez followed suit in the 8th and then Ryan Madson came in for the 9th with 4 runs to play with.  He gave back one run but still escaped with a 9-6 win.

So the question now remains, how effective will Moyer be in future starts?  The one big inning nearly killed him, but the Phils bats bailed him out.  But no team can be expected to score 9 runs every game.  Well, it was only his first start, so we will have to wait and see how his next start goes.

Also of note, the Phillies kept their streak of at least 10 hits in a game going tonight.  Yes, all 5 games played so far have featured at least 10 hits and a minimum of 5 runs scored.  They are averaging over 8 runs a game…scary.  Can they keep up this pace?  We hope so :O)

The Phillies will finish the series with the Astros Sunday at 2:05pm.  It will be a battle of the Roy’s; Halladay vs. Oswalt.  The Astros are still looking for their first win, so do not expect them to just lie down and give up.  It should be a good game….Go Phillies!

Meet The Newbie’s

So another Opening Day has passed and the Phillies are on their way to global dominance…or, something like it anyway ;o)  If you missed my photos from the event, check out the PHOTO ALBUM which includes Opening Day ceremonies, President Obama’s first pitch and game action.

1-warm ups (38).jpgAnd now it is time to start the season off right and introduce yourselves to the newest members of the 2010 Phillies.  The first one is easy…if you do not know who Roy Halladay is, you are clearly not a Phillies fan.  No worries though…only one game has passed; you have time to catch up .  Here is Mr. Halladay on the right with his very, very serious pre-game face on.  This former Cy Young winner goes by the nickname “Doc” and he is pretty amazing.  Enough said.

The few players you may not know well include pitchers Danys Baez, Jose Contreras and David Herndon; outfielder Ross Gload, infielder Juan Castro and catcher Brian Schneider, pictured here in that order from left to right, top to bottom:

newbies.jpgBoth Baez and Contreras are Cuban defectors; Baez is in his 9th major league season, pitched last for the Orioles and has a name that defies normal spelling rules.  Contreras, not as hard to spell, is in his 7th season and helped the Yankees coin the term “Evil Empire” when they signed him over the Red Sox back in 2002.  In other words, the Sox were pissed….end of story.

Herndon was in the Angels minor leagues last year and this will be his first shot at the bigs.  Ladies, he is single and plays the guitar…go get him!  I kid…

As for Gload, this is his 9th season in the majors and his 6th team.  He is a lifetime .283 hitter and should be a solid bench player for the Phillies.  Castro is another veteran going into his 16th season; he will be 38 in June and may start taking the same youth-inducing vitamins Jamie Moyer does ;o)  He is not a power hitter, but will be a good defensive back-up for the infield.  Schneider, formerly of the Mets and Nationals, is very familiar with the Phillies.  And as a former Phillies-killer, we are glad to have him on our side now.  His 11th season will be served as back-up to Carlos Ruiz.

And as a bonus, here are a few guys who are not really new, but you may not know them.  Pitchers Antonio Bastardo and Drew Carpenter are still rookies who spent a very short time with the Phillies last year.  They spent most of 2009 in the Phillies minors.

And then there is Placido Polanco, who returns to the Phillies after almost a 5 year absence; he was traded in 2005 to the Tigers.  But after his record-setting performance of 6 RBI in one game yesterday, the most by any Phillie on Opening Day, I am confident you now know who he is.  Welcome back, Polly!

Moyer Will Start; Kendrick to The Pen

It is official; Jamie Moyer will be the 5th starter in the Phillies pitching rotation and Kyle Kendrick will start in the pen.  This is the move everyone expected, so it is not a big shock.  And if Moyer gets roughed up, they can always switch roles.

A few other bullpen pitchers to watch as the season begins will be lefty Antonio Bastardo and righty Jose Contreras.  These are the two guys who may make or break the pen in April.  Bastardo is filling in for JC Romero who is still recovering from arm surgery, but he expects to be ready before the end of April.  Bastardo’s pitching has been up and down this spring and after today, he has an ERA of 6.23.  He is young, so consistency will be an issue.

On the other hand, Contreras is a veteran who is nearing the golden years of his career.  His pitching has been more down than up.  Today against the Astros, he blew a Phillies lead in the 5th,, giving up 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning.  The Phillies lost the game by a score of 2-5.  His ERA stands at 9.00 for spring, which is pretty awful.  Then again, it is spring and these games don’t count.  But how will he perform in April based on what we have seen so far?  It is not a pleasant thought.

Brad Lidge is still recovering from surgery too so the Phillies need a closer.  Ryan Madson has been officially given the job until Lidge returns.  Madson did not adjust to the role very well last year, but knowing ahead of time that the job is his may help.  I spoke to Ryan in January on the Phillies Cruise and he feels that with more time to adjust and with more practice in the role, he can be successful.  He has the stuff to do the job and I think he will be just fine.

Another head-turner in camp today involved Jayson Werth and the Grizzly Adams / Caveman beard.  Todd Zolecki of The Zo Zone reports that Werth shaved off the beard!  Tiny, helpless screams from beard-loving fans were heard throughout the town but, in his usual nonchalance, Werth went on with his life and paid them no mind.  He is such a rebel ;o)

Two more spring games to go before the Phillies head north on Friday morning!  Still counting the days…

Moyer Plays Superman; Hamels Still Working On It

While nothing official has been announced yet, it looks like the 5th starters spot will go to Jamie Moyer.  Against the Yankees on Friday, Moyer solidified his bid for the job by pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed only 1 hit.
Moyer superman.jpg
His overall ERA for spring is now 2.61, if your count all the “B” games he pitched also.  Is it possible that this 47-year old man, coming off 3 surgeries in the off-season, is simply just indestructible?  Either he is taking Fountain of Youth pills or secretly, he is Superman with the red, white and blue uniform being perfect camouflage for his super hero suit.

So Kyle Kendrick will probably start the year in the bullpen and just wait around for someone to toss a huge ball of Kryptonite at Moyer.  Either way, Kendrick should be content just to make the team after a young but up and down career so far.

Leaving his super hero costume at home, Cole Hamels is still a work in progress.  He got beat up on Saturday against the Twins, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 1/3 innings.  While Hamels was pleased that he was able to reach the 90-pitch mark in a game, he still has some big control issues to work out.  After the game, Hamels told the press that he is “starting to really feel game-oriented.”  With only 8 days left until Opening Day, let us hope that his “game-oriented” compass is pointing towards the strike zone.

Another point of concern this spring is Raul Ibanez, who is barely swinging the bat with a paltry .098 average.  That is only 4 hits in 41 at bats.  Ibanez struggle the 2nd half of 2009 with a hernia that was operated on this off-season.  While he recovered well from the operation, he still has not looked at all like the “RAUUUUUL” of old.  To make matters worse, he got hit in the right elbow with a pitch on Friday.  It may not be a serious injury, but it may be enough that he does not get much more hitting practice before Opening Day.

When the Phillies signed Ibanez to replace Pat Burrell last year, many people, myself included, questioned why they signed a player who was 4-years older than Burrell to a 3-year contract.  Ibanez will turn 38 in June and it does appear that he is not wearing the same Superman cape that Jamie Moyer is using.  Moyer is a freak of nature.  Ibanez, however, appears to be a mere mortal.  While everyone was thrilled with his performance in the first half of 2009, things went downhill from there and show no signs of improving.  Cross your fingers; this could get interesting.

The good news is, if one of the outfielders should go down, John Mayberry Jr. is waiting in the wings.  Mayberry was sent to minor league camp today, but he had a great spring and would likely be first in line to be brought up if anything goes wrong.   Mayberry had 6 RBI, a homer, 3 doubles and hit for an average of .289 in camp.

Two more players were reassigned today also; catcher Dane Sardinha and infielder Ozzie Chavez.  This means the bench for the Phillies should consist of catcher Brian Schneider, infielders Juan Castro and Greg Dobbs and outfielder Ross Gload.  With the 12 pitchers and other regulars, that should complete the 25-man roster.

Age Battles Youth

After another solid start from pitcher Kyle Kendrick on Thursday against the Astros, the competition for the 5th starters spot is getting more interesting by the day.  Kendrick pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing just 1 earned run on 5 hits and 2 walks.  His spring ERA stands at 1.37.

Moyer J.jpgJamie Moyer
has only pitched in one “A” game so far and a bunch of “B” games, but he will face the Yankees tonight in his final bid for the 5th spot.  Moyer’s one regular spring outing ended with a 1.80 ERA for 1 run over 5 innings of work.  Tonight’s game then will likely be the deciding factor.

If Moyer does well, it looks like the spot may be his.  However, if he gets beat up by the Yanks, he still may get the nod anyway.  Although Kendrick has more than earned the spot and personally, I feel it should be his, the Phillies will probably go with experience over youth.  Poor Kyle has all kinds of factors working against him; his youth, Moyer’s huge $8 million dollar salary and the fact that Moyer has never been a bullpen pitcher.

Moyer did work from the pen a little last year when Pedro Martinez arrived, but only for extended innings, like after rain delays.  So essentially, he was still being used more as a starter than a bullpen piece.  Manager Charlie Manuel seemed very hesitant to put Moyer in for only a few batters which tells you that they were not confident about his ability to pitch out of the bullpen.

My prediction is that the Phillies will go with Moyer and put Kendrick in the pen.  After Moyer has a few bad outings, they will probably switch, just like Chan Ho Park and JA Happ did last season.  Then again, as with most predictions, anything can happen.

Reunion

The Phillies were reunited yesterday with former teammate Brett Myers who was the starting pitcher for the Astros.  Myers made Philly his home for 11 years, with the same team who drafted him.
myers phils.jpg
Seeing him another uniform was strange.  Then again, considering how many ex-Phillies are with the Astros, including Myers, Pedro Feliz, Jason Michaels, Michael Bourn, and Gary Majewski, maybe we should all be Astros fans too?  Or maybe not…

Myers left the game early with a strained left groin, but it appears to be minor.  Afterwards, Myers spoke about the Philly fans saying, “I felt appreciated when I came out of the game and they all stood up and clapped for me. That was very respectful. Philly fans get a bad rap, but they’re loyal to the guys that played there and have done things for the organization. I really appreciated that. That was classy.”  Myers will be missed by many Philly fans and we wish him well…unless he is playing against the Phillies, of course ;o)

Complications

Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick are making the competition for the 5th starters spot a bit complicated.  Both have performed well.  And yesterday against the Orioles in his first “A” game start, Moyer made the decision even more complex by pitching 5 innings of one run ball.  If the race remains close throughout the next few weeks, odds are that Moyer will get the nod based on experience and payroll and Kendrick will begin the year in the pen.  But, as happened with Chan Ho Park and JA Happ last season, the roles could be flipped if Moyer falters.

P7098599 Hamels.jpgThen today against the Yankees, Cole Hamels ran into a few complications of his own.  Hamels has pitched well this spring…that is, until today.  Giving up 6 earned runs over just 4 innings, Hamels got spanked by the Yanks.  That brings his spring ERA to 4.91, which is not too awful.  Plus, these games do not count anyway.  Should we be worried about Hamels after one bad outing?  Probably not.  If it stretches into 2 or 3 bad outings, then we’ll talk.

What is not so complicated now is the Opening Day pitching roster.  Having sent lefty Mike Zagurski to the minors, there are exactly 12 healthy pitchers remaining: Starters Roy Halladay, Hamels, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ and Kendrick or Moyer.  The pen will be Ryan Madson, Danys Baez, Chad Durbin, Jose Contreras, David Herndon, Antonio Bastardo and then either Kendrick or Moyer.  If the Phillies pick up another piece along the way, this can change, but odds are this will be the pitching staff.  Of course, once Brad Lidge and JC Romero are ready, more changes will be made.

On the offensive end, there was an odd standout performance today.  Hawaiian born 3rd/4th string catcher, Dane Sardinha, previously of the Tigers, went 2 for 4 against the Yankees with 4 RBI on a 3-run double and a solo homer.  The unlikely performance came from a guy who hit .097 with the Tigers in 2009 and was arrested for a DUI in Clearwater, FL last month.  Like Tiger Woods, I suppose he is making his case for forgiveness ;o)

Those four runs today helped the Phillies to the 9-7 9th inning comeback win over the Yanks.  Wilson Valdez, another non-roster invitee like Sardinha, knocked a 2-run homer for the walk-off win.  Next up: Tampa Bay on Tuesday and the Braves on Wednesday…

Half Way Through Spring

Having gone past the half-way point of Spring Training, the paring down of the Phillies roster has begun.  The first fourteen cuts included pitchers Phillippe Aumont, Yohan Flande, Scott Mathieson, Drew Naylor, J.C. Ramirez, Jesus Sanchez, Joe Savery and Bill White; position players cut were catchers Tuffy Gosewisch, Kevin Nelson and John Sumoi; infielder Freddy Galvis; and outfielders Quintin Berry and Tyson Gillies.  You will notice that all three of the players involved in the Cliff Lee trade are on the list.

One of those players, Aumont, had a very rough start in camp in an exhibition game.  But after that, he made a solid 2 2/3 inning appearance where he did not allow a run.  J.C. Ramirez did not fare as well, appearing in two games and allowing 3 runs over 4 1/3 innings.  Both pitchers are still early in their development and we may not have a real sense of their worth for some time to come.

Thumbnail image for Gillies.jpgThe third player from the Lee trade is Tyson Gillies who showed some real potential.  He ended his trip to camp with a .286 average in 7 at-bats, including a home run, a double and 2 RBI.  Gillies told the press that camp was a huge learning experience for him and was especially grateful to manager Charlie Manuel for his words of advice; Gillies said, “Charlie told me the things I need to work on, slowing things down. Slower. Slower when I’m hitting. He wants me to be slow with the feet, and quick with the hands. Basically just stay back a little bit more. Keep my hands and everything back and try not to lunge at everything. Let the ball come to me.”

While it is endearing to hear those comments from a young player, it also leaves one to wonder what exactly the coaching staff in Seattle has been doing…or not doing.  Gillies has been in the minors since 2007 and no one ever told him not to lunge at the ball?  Or even how to properly approach an at-bat and hit the ball?  It is no wonder then why so many young players develop so many bad habits.  Seems that “coaching” may be a lost art…

Those players that remain in camp will slowly be whittled down to the final 25-man roster.  Starting pitchers, like JA Happ, will see a steady increase in innings.  Happ went 4 solid yesterday in a 5-4 win over the Twins.  He allowed just one hit and struck out 3.  Kyle Kendrick followed today with 4 solid innings of his own, allowing 2 hits.  Kendrick remains on the heels of Jamie Moyer in the competition for the 5th starters spot.

As for the hitters, here is a look at the batting averages for each player still in camp, with at least 5 at-bats:

Chase Utley and Placido Polanco lead the pack among the regular players.  And as expected, Polanco’s transition from 2nd to 3rd base has been very smooth.  He had one rough game right at the start for his only error of Spring, but has been great ever since.  Polanco has 17 assists and turned 5 double plays in 42 innings of work.

As for the still rehabbing players, Brad Lidge is doing well and will start a Double A Spring game on Thursday.  Manager Charlie Manuel announced that is Lidge is not ready in April, Ryan Madson will be given the closer duties.  JC Romero is also progressing, but will not be ready for Opening Day; he did throw some breaking balls today for the first time since his surgery and depending on how he feels over the next few days, he may get to throw to hitters this week.
