Happ Pitches Well But Offense Leaves Him Hanging

The game began with a Pirates lead-off home run off the rookie, JA Happ.  But after that, Happ did not budge and sent the Bucos away each inning frustrated.

P4190940 Happ2.jpg
Happ went 8 innings, gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks.  Happ had a 2-1 lead until the 8th inning when he surrendered the big blow; a 2-run shot by Garrett Jones to give the Bucos a 3-2 lead.  Still a great outing by Happ, but with no offense to back him up, the result was not ideal.

Well, no offense except Jimmy Rollins and Paul Bako.  Rollins looked like the energizer bunny all night long as the ball jumped off his bat and his defense was stunning.  But his effort of 3 for 5 on the night was the only real offense in the game.  Ryan Howard collected an RBI on a force out in the 1st inning with the bases loaded. The following inning, back-up catcher Paul Bako hit a rare home run as fans did a double take at their TV sets…Bako who?  The surprise homer from Bako seemed to lull the Phillies into a deep trance from which they did not wake up.  In fact, neither team scored again until that killer home run by the Pirates in the 8th.

The Phillies offense this entire 3-game series was pathetic.  Howard helped give the numbers a boost with his 3-run homer yesterday, but that was about the only hitting highlight of the series.  Losing 2 out of 3 to a last place team is just very, very sad.

The Braves come to town tomorrow for 3 games and hopefully, the Phillies will find their bats!

Kalas Memorial / Lidge Blows A Save

DSCF1632.jpg

The Phillies held a memorial service at the ballpark today for Harry Kalas, which they shared with the fans, as well as Harry’s friends and family.  Fans were able to pass by Harry’s casket, which sat on the field behind home plate, and were then seated to watch the services.  This beautiful and extremely moving program included speeches from Mike Schmidt, Richard Ashburn, Mayor Michael Nutter, Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, and many other friends of Harry.  The entire Phillies team attended the memorial, first passing by the casket to pay their respects, and then sitting in the stands behind home plate.  Phillies of the past were also in attendance, including Steve Carlton, Greg Luzinski, Larry Christianson, Garry Maddox, Robin Roberts and many more.

The big tear-jerker of the day came when all Phillies players, past and present, were asked to take the field; they lined up two by two and literally lifted Harry’s casket and passed it down the line through each others hands until they reached the hearse.  Those players at the end of the line, including Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Brett Myers, Carlos Ruiz and others, gently placed the casket into the rear of the hearse and everyone watched as Harry was driven out of the ballpark.  Many were unable to contain their emotions and tears flowed freely.  When I saw Shane Victorino crying, who just lost his grandmother in October, my heart sunk.  To think what all these players have gone through this week, as well as everyone who knew Harry, is just heartbreaking.

What a tragic start to the 2009 season for the Phillies, who all seem to be downtrodden by this turn of events.  All we can hope now is that they can filter those emotions into a positive, and dedicate their season to Harry’s memory.

The Phillies have lost 3 in a row now with tonight’s 8-5 loss to the Padres, despite a great outing from Brett Myers.  Myers notched a quality start with 6 2/3 innings pitched and 3 runs allowed; he even contributed with a double at the plate and a run scored.  But for the 2nd night in a row, Ryan Madson came in and gave the Padres the lead with one run allowed in the 8th.  Chase Utley tied the game up again in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off home run to right.

P4170397 Ibanez.jpg
Raul Ibanez
followed with single and then his amazing base running landed him on 3rd base after a Jayson Werth single.  With one out, Pedro Feliz collected the RBI on sac fly and Ibanez crossed home plate, giving the lead to the Phillies, 5-4.  But that lead would not hold for long.

Brad Lidge, as expected, pitched the 9th inning, hoping to remain perfect in save opportunities.  After receiving his award before the game for that perfect 2008 record, Lidge finally blew a save tonight, ending his streak of 47 in a row.  And he didn’t just blow it; he really, really blew it.  In 2/3 of an inning, Lidge gave up 4 runs, the majority of which came on a Kevin Kouzmanoff 3-run homer.  That inning really took the wind out of the sails for the Phillies, and they went down easily in the bottom of the 9th.

Tomorrow’s game against the Padres will begin at 1:35pm with Chan Ho Park on the mound.  I will be there, and hopefully, the Phillies can get things back on track.  Maybe the Phanatic’s birthday celebration will lighten the mood?  One can only hope…

Phillies Cruise Photos & Video

Hello!  Well, I still haven’t unpacked, but I did put together a photo slideshow for you and one video.  My priorities are totally in order :O)  Click HERE to view the Slideshow.

And here is the video of Shane Victorino calling Charlie Manuel from the ship; all the Phillies fans sung Happy Birthday to him…

I have more video to upload but it will be a few days at least until I get to that.  But it is the off-season; what else do we have to do?? :O)

Phillies Cruise – Going Home

*Sigh!*  Sad to report that we are all on our way home….some quicker than others.  I will be sitting on the floor of this airport for many, many hours before heading back to Philly.  So, while I am here I thought I would give you all an update on the last few days of the cruise.

We had the autograph session yesterday where everyone participated, even Scott Palmer :O)  Shane looked like he was not feeling well and later, missed the final cocktail party as a result.  He was at dinner so I assume he is doing fine.  Anyway, I got a few World Series balls signed and a whole bunch of my pictures to add to my collection (I have a whole binder full of 5×7 shots that I took and later got them signed).  DSCF0625 Andersen.jpgWe had some very old Halloween masks of Larry Andersen’s face with us which was a promotion way back in 1985 at a game.  I had Larry sign a few of them and then gave him 2 to keep.  Also gave away a few others to some new friends we met on-board.  Everyone got a big kick out of them; Shane even tried one on.  Here is a photo of Larry holding what he called his “twin.”

Later, at the farewell cocktail party, I had a very nice, long conversation with JC Romero’s wife (hi Erin!).  She is just one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.  I told her about my horror at how MLB handled the steroid allegations and she spoke to me about that for a while.  Without revealing too many details, I can say that she and JC feel they have nothing to hide and she even said JC was hoping someone would have asked him about it at the Q&A so he could respond.  We both agreed that she & I were mostly of the opposite mind – I was really hoping no one bothered him about it :O)  But Erin was gracious in speaking with me and I will hold that confidence.  So sorry, no BIG scoop here except to say that JC has done nothing wrong (which I knew anyway).  There is currently a website HERE that gives the detail of the suspension and why it should be lifted.  PLEASE visit the site and sign the petition!  Once you read it, you will see that JC asked permission to take the supplement and was told by both his trainer and MLBPA (players association) that it was ok to take.  They had NO right to do this to him.  Please let your voice be heard!!  Here is one more I found…Petition for JC.  Sign both!

So later at dinner, Larry went around to ALL the tables with Phillies fans and took photos of the people at each table.  I guess he is making a scrapbook of us all…how cute!  And all the fans cheered again at the end of dinner, “Let’s Go Phillies!”  Lots of fun :O)

Well, as promised more photos and video to follow!  I will get to work as soon as I get home.  Feel free to e-mail me anytime or comment below.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Phillies Cruise On-Board Update

Hey everyone!  I am on board the ms Westerdam with Shane Victorino, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski, Scott Palmer and the Phanatic!.  We are currently docked in the Bahamas :O)  It’s only Day 2 and a LOT has happened so far!  Here we go:

I took pictures with everyone but Shane yesterday at the welcome party, but I did get a photo with his wife :O)  Or fiancée?  Not sure if they tied the knot yet.  Anyway, I had better things to do with Shane…tell ya that shortly.  LA was drinking and then jokingly telling people he quit drinking (yeah, since the last time he sat his glass down).  He asked me after we took a photo if it was ok that he was holding a glass of champagne in the photo…hee!  I assured him I’d have had one also but I ran out.  He quickly found the nearest waiter and pointed at him to fill me up :O)  LA is awesome.  The Bull (Luzinski), JC & Erin Romero, Shane & Melissa and the Phanatic all cruised the room and talked to the fans.

During the intros by Palmer, Shane decided to call Charlie Manuel and have us all wish him a happy birthday.  So, he held his phone up and everyone sang to Charlie.  I have that on video and will post it when I return…very cute!

The highlight of my evening though was hanging out with Shane.  I had spent some time talking to his wife earlier (she is very nice!) and ran into them again at the elevator on the way to dinner.  I rode the elevator with Shane, Melissa, a AAA agent and then inadvertently wound up spending the next 20 minutes walking the ship with them.  We just got to chatting and they seemed happy with  me hanging out as I was not asking for autographs or photos (thus, no photo w/Shane yet…this was way more fun though).

Anyway, we talked about the regulations for flying out of Hawaii, the ship, shopping, etc…  Shane told me this was his first cruise and his wife said he was a bit worried about the motion.  He was happy though that he had not really felt the boat moving.  That was too cute :O)  I told him about a cruise I took to Bermuda where we hit a storm and his eyes got real big.  He said, “No, no don’t tell me that…please, no storms.”  We all had a nice laugh over that.

Then we walked though the gift shop and talked about all the stuff we wanted to buy.  I told his wife I had better not spend much time in there as I was a bit tipsy and might spend too much.  She said, “Well, that’s the problem with him (Shane), he’s not doing that (drinking).”  I told her that was probably a good thing but she then said it wasn’t because he would not be in the mood to shop for her!  Ha!  Shane then told me to feel free to spend my husbands’ money :O)

Next, the AAA lady guided us to a map of the world were the ship’s location was labeled in red lights.  I told Shane it was the “You are here” map and he laughed.  We checked out the map and moved on to the photo area.  The ship people take a photo of you and your significant other / kids / whoever when you board and Shane wanted to buy their photo.  They are all posted on these huge wall-like stand-ups and I helped him & Melissa look for their photo.  We found mine and all agreed it was awful :O)  I was looking off in the distance instead of at the camera!  Not like I really needed one more photo of myself though, ya know?

We all then went into the dining room and Shane was seated only 3 tables away from us with JC and the rest of the crew, so that was nice also.  Today, I saw him on the beach in the Bahamas and he waved and said hello.  So, that is the end of my Victorino adventure!  Do you hate me yet?  Hee!  Anyway, here are some photos from the 2 days so far.  Descriptions are from left to right, top to bottom:

1-Shane smiling and the party, 2- Shane walking by on the beach with a friend, 3- The Phanatic serving hors’dourves, 4- JC and Erin Romero, 5 -Waiting by the elevator with Shane, 6- The Bull chatting at the bar, 7- LA announces the Eagles game score, 8- Is former Phillie Aaron Rowand on this cruise???!!  Damn…no such luck.  But this guy really looks like him!, 9- Shane, Melissa and Scott Palmer, 10- Me, Melissa, AAA lady and Shane checking out the map.Phillies Cruise 09.jpg

Ok, that’s all for now!  I am limited on internet time here so if you have sent me e-mail or comments recently and I did not or do not get back to you right away, I promise I will do so when I return.  I will post more updates as well as soon as I can.  Stay tuned!

Phillies Phantastic Voyage Preview

P2251704 Romero.jpg

In a few days, I will be on my way to join Phillies Shane Victorino, JC Romero, Larry Andersen, Greg Luzinski and the Phanatic for an 8-day Caribbean cruise!  The cruise is on Holland America’s ms Westerdam leaving Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 1/4/09.  Specially planned Phillies-only events include a photo session, autograph session, Q&A session, screening of the World Series highlight film, meet and greet with the Phanatic, and 3 Phillies cocktail parties.  If any of my readers will also be attending, please drop me a note to let me know.  I’d love to say hello!

And in addition to all the Phillies fun, we will be stopping at the Bahamas, Grand Turk, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico.  I plan to do some scuba diving and check out the Mayan ruins. :O)  I know Shane is a diver as well…maybe he’ll be in the water with me! :O)  One can dream….

So anyway, I will attempt to do a few mini-reports here as the cruise progresses: this will depend upon the reliability of the internet connection aboard the ship.  Fingers crossed!  Either way, I promise to bring back lots of fun photos for you!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone out there reading; you have helped make this blog a huge success!  I love hearing from other Phillies fans so as always, feel free to comment or write to me.  And please, please….Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Phillies Players – Strange, Fun & Unique Nicknames

It has always been a tradition in baseball to assign players a nickname.  Whether that be a descriptive one, a play on words, or just plain weird, most guys seem to get one at some point that winds up sticking with them.  I have compiled a list of nicknames for the 2008 Phillies that I could find and then other Phillies from years past.  I tried to avoid any media-given names and just stick to the stuff the players use amongst themselves.  I also put years by some of the older or more obscure player names.  Hope you enjoy it…have a Happy Holiday!!!

2008 Phillies Players

Brad “Light’s Out” Lidge

Hamels Puts The Brew Crew On Ice

Cole Hamels totally mystified the Brewers tonight.  They looked confused at the plate, and even had a bad defensive game as they were so bleary-eyed from facing Hamels.  After 8 full innings of work, Hamels had not given up a run and only surrendered 2 hits.  He also had 9 strikeouts in his shut-out performance.

The Phillies offense was not much better against the Brewers’ starter.  They had only 3 hits off him and, thanks to a Brewers error in the 3rd, wound up scoring 3 runs that inning, none of them earned.  But that turned out to be all the offense they needed.  Brad Lidge had another tummy turner of an outing as he allowed 2 hits, one walk and one run.  As I stood in the rain, wiping the water from my face, I was so queasy I thought I might pass out.  Well, Lidge did eventually put me out of my misery and escaped with the win.  It was very emotional, as you can see…here is a shot right after the game of Jimmy Rollins and Lidge sharing the moment:
Lidge hug.jpg

The pre-game festivities were exciting as well.  Broadcasters and Alumni took the stage to rile up the fans and then a pre-recorded message of thanks from both Pat Gillick and Jamie Moyer was played for the fans on the big screen TV outside the stadium.  On stage, we heard from Greg Luzinski, Larry Anderson, Mitch Williams, Gary Matthews and of course, Harry Kalas who sung “High Hopes” for us again.  Here are some photos from the rally:

Phanatic smashing a Brewers helmet:

And a few game shots I got before it started pouring!

I will be at tomorrows’ game as well and hope to bring you more photos and info.  Until then, I must get some sleep!  Go Phillies!
