Phillies Close Out Regular Season With A Sweep

The Phillies ended the season today with a series sweep of the Nationals, winning today’s game by a score of 8-3.  This game very much resembled a Spring Training game, as all of the rookies and back-ups got the start.  It was a lot of fun as the whole team, having already clinched the Division, was very relaxed and they were all having a good time.  Most fans even stuck around after the game to dance, catch prizes from the Phanatic and the ball girls and just revel in the glory of a great season and the Phils’ 2nd consecutive NL East Title.  Signed balls, tee shirts and I don’t know what else, flew through the air as the fireworks erupted above.  The only question that still lingered was, will it be the Brewers or the Dodgers?

That question was answered shortly after the game as the Brewers won and the Mets, for the second straight year, lost and will again not see the post-season.  Another sad collapse for Mets fans; a bright spot for Phillies fans as I think we can all agree that the Brewers will be the better match-up in the playoffs.  And so it is; the Phillies will face the Brewers on Wednesday in Philly – Time TBD.

As for today, there were a lot of great moments for the youngsters and back-ups playing; Lou Marson went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, including hitting his very first Major League home run.  What a night for his first start in the Bigs!  Right after Marson hit his homer, on the very next pitch, pinch hitter Matt Stairs followed with one of his own!  Nice.  And the fun continues…So Taguchi looked like the player we all assumed he was at the beginning of the season; he went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and was great on defense as well.  The other “guchi,” Tadahito Iguchi, and Eric Bruntlett each had 2 hits in the game.  Jayson Werth pinch hit in the 4th, whacked a single and then followed it up with his 20th steal of the year as he swiped 2nd base.  That put him in the 20-20 club with more than 20 homers (24) and 20 stolen bases.  Impressive for a guy who was not a starter at the beginning of the year.  And then for more pinch hit fun, in the 6th inning Ryan Howard hit a slap-bunt up the 3rd base line to beat the shift and eventually wound up scoring in that inning.  If he can do this more often, he may see the Howard defensive shift slowly disappear…  And as a side note, Howard managed with that hit to raise his batting average over the .250 mark for the year (.251, to be exact).

Here are some photos from the game…first one is from the pre-game.  Many of the Phillies regular starters came out to thank the fans and a few of them spoke.  Jimmy Rollins and Brad Lidge were both very eloquent in their speeches.  Then, the microphone was passed to Chase Ultey who proceeded to give the world’s fastest “Thank You” ever.  All he said was, “You guys have been unbelievable,” and then immediately began to walk off, which prompted this reaction from his teammates:

Funny stuff!  The crowd laughed right along with them.  Utley, as we know, is a bit speech-shy.

Next photos – Top row:  Phanatic & the Mystery Baby Phanatic (from the crowd!) try to hex to opposing pitcher; Eric Bruntlett makes a great play.  Bottom row:  Bruntlett and Taguchi round the bases; Chris Coste, in a rare appearance at first base, scoops up a dribbler and tags out the runner.

Phillies Beat The Braves…Again

I hate to sound like I am repeating myself, but still am happy to do so as the Phillies topped the Braves yet again tonight by a score of 6-2.  They have only lost to the Braves twice this entire year in 15 meetings.  Tonight, it was a 2-2 tie game going into the 8th inning, but the Phillies got the go ahead run thanks to a key pinch hit from Greg Dobbs.  As for his injury last night, apparently he is just fine J  Rookie P9191827 Greg Golson took over to run for Dobbs and he was able to advance to third base on a throwing error as the Braves tried to pick him off.  After that Chase Utley walked and Golson scored on a hit and run as Jayson Werth grounded to third base; Golson beat the tag at home by sliding under the glove of the catcher.  When asked after the game what he said to Golson about running for him, Greg Dobbs said he told the rookie, “You can caddy for me anytime.”  Golson is lightning quick around those bases!  Next up in the 8th, Pat Burrell added some nice insurance runs with a homer to score Utley & Werth.  And with Burrell struggling lately, he really need that to get some confidence back going into these last few games.

JA Happ started the game and kept the Phillies in it.  He tossed 6 2/3 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.  The bullpen did the rest.  Happ has been outstanding in his short stay up in the majors and it looks like he really wants to nab a permanent spot.  I for one am Happ-Y to have him J  Not sure how it will all play out, but that is a non-issue at the moment as the team is focused only on winning this Division.  The Mets look like they’d like to help us out too.  They lost last night and are currently trailing the Cubs by 4 runs.  It is looking like another last season collapse for them; how nice of them to oblige. J

Phillies currently lead by 2 games; it will be 2 ½ if the Mets lose.  5 games to go; 2 more with Atlanta, then an off day and 3 against the Nats.  Cole Hamels gets the start tomorrow at 7:05pm.  We are nearly there…

Phillies Win 1st Game of Doubleheader

We can all breathe a small sigh of relief.  The Phillies won the afternoon game with the Mets 6-2, putting them within 1 game of first place.  If they can sweep the series tonight, they will be tied.  Jamie Moyer, just as I predicted, stepped it up and was awesome through 7 innings.  He allowed only 2 hits and did not surrender a run.  I swear the man gets better with age!  Whatever he’s got keeping him so young, he ought to bottle it and sell it…I’ll be first in line to buy it!

For the offense, Greg Dobbs was terrific at 3rd base!  He made some very difficult plays on defense and also went P4177723_dobbs_cr 2 for 4 including a 3-run homer to break the game open for the Phillies.  Charlie Manuel decided to start Dobbs over Pedro Feliz in the day game because he had “a feeling” about him and Dobbs did not let him down.  I have said this before, but I really think switching back and forth between Dobbs & Feliz is the way to go.  Dobbs is certainly great as a pinch hitter, but as a starter, he has also consistently produced and his defense has greatly improved.

Carlos Ruiz appeared to emerge from his funk today.  He went 3 for 4 with one RBI and scored a run.  Matt Stairs made his first contribution to his new team by picking up an RBI on a sac fly in the 2nd inning.  And Greg Golson got his first at bat as a major leaguer, but he went down swinging.  His second time up, he flied out to center and he also had one error in the outfield.  Probably not how he imagined his debut, but he’ll get the hang of it soon. J

Final game of the series tonight at 8:05pm on ESPN!  Cole Hamels vs. Johan Santana – ought to be a tight game so it is nice that we did not have to use Brad Lidge in the first game.  We may need him tonight….we hope!  Go Phillies!
