Phillies Win NL East For 3rd Consecutive Year
Pop the champagne Phillies fans; for the 3rd year in a row, this team has won the NL East and will be playing in the post-season. In a game that included at least one RBI from every starting position player except lead-off hitter Jimmy Rollins, the Phillies powered their way to a 10-3 mashing of the Astros to win the title. Rollins did have 2 hits in the game though, plus a walk and he scored twice.
A true team effort, the win included back-to-back triples by Rollins and Shane Victorino, a massive 2-run homer by Raul Ibanez, a sac fly, a stolen base and 3 doubles. Pedro Martinez pitched only 4 innings and allowed 3 runs, but his teammates picked him up with their hitting and some great relief pitching. Kyle Kendrick, who spent nearly the whole year in the minors, pitched 3 innings of scoreless ball allowing only 2 hits. Chad Durbin picked up the 8th; Scott Eyre got the 1st 2 outs in the 9th and, believe it or not, Charlie Manuel put Brad Lidge in to finish the game. Lidge got his old buddy Lance Berkman out on 1 pitch.
So, it is time to rejoice! Since I was not able to attend the game tonight, I broke out some old photos from the 2007 NL East clinching game. Here are a few ways the Phillies may now be celebrating:

Here at home, the Phillies unofficial mascots, J-Roll Smurf and Chutley Smurf are also partying hard. A drink and a victory lap:

Now just take a deep breath and exhale…ahhhhhh! Time to relax…for now. Home field advantage is still up for grabs. That challenge will begin with tomorrow night at 7:05pm in the last game of 4 against the Astros. Go Phillies!

Phillies Smurfs Off-Season Adventure
Turns out, I am not the only one around here who is counting the days until Spring Training. The lack of newsworthy events and baseball activities are simply mind-numbing. J-Roll Smurf and Chutley Smurf have been as bored as the rest of us. With the big news in Phillies land this week being Carlos Ruiz deciding to join Team Panama for the World Baseball Classic, poor J-Roll Smurf thought maybe he’d pass the time surfing the net, or maybe reading a mildly entertaining book:
Could Ryan Howard bring us all out of our slumber and actually agree to a contract this week? Noooooo… So, J-Roll Smurf was off to raid the fridge and then decided to call over a few friends for a party:
But the only one to show up was Chutley Smurf, as everyone else was already asleep. J-Roll Smurf tried to show Chutley Smurf some photos from the World Series Trophy tour, but you all know what a trouble maker Chutley Smurf is. All he wanted to do was ride his motorcycle through the living room and raid the cookie jar:
J-Roll Smurf began telling stories about his idol, Jimmy Rollins, and how he stopped by a YMCA on Friday to talk with local children; but all Chutley Smurf did was steal a bottle of my best Soprano’s wine and snort a few lines!
All that partying got the best of these Smurf buddies and things went awry from there. Frankly, I did not see this next one coming, and neither did the poor cats:
Hours passed, still without arbitration news or the swing of a bat…what is a Smurf to do? Well, after all the booze and happy candy, I can tell you what they did next:
Ahhhhhh….and now for some much needed sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Phillies Players – Strange, Fun & Unique Nicknames
It has always been a tradition in baseball to assign players a nickname. Whether that be a descriptive one, a play on words, or just plain weird, most guys seem to get one at some point that winds up sticking with them. I have compiled a list of nicknames for the 2008 Phillies that I could find and then other Phillies from years past. I tried to avoid any media-given names and just stick to the stuff the players use amongst themselves. I also put years by some of the older or more obscure player names. Hope you enjoy it…have a Happy Holiday!!!

The Voodoo Returns…
In light of the Phillies recent loss to the Tampa Bay Rays and the terrible absence of offense for the Phils, I have decided to take drastic measures. Yes, I have dusted off old J-Roll Smurf and he is back to doing what he does best: Voodoo magic on the opponent.
But this time, his has a partner in crime. Chutley Smurf, although smaller in stature than J-Roll Smurf, carries a bat that is proportionately larger to his body size than that of J-Roll Smurf. J He is a pint-sized warrior! And so together, these Phillies-lovin’ Smurfs will conquer the enemy – The Rays. This is the World Series: this is no time for the meek. Crush those squirmy fish!
J-Roll Smurf (Rollins) is batting only .191 so far in the post-season with just 2 RBI. Not too Smurfy so far… It is our hope that he will break out of this slump tonight in front of the friendly, Smurf-Lovin’ crowd. Chutley Smurf (Chase Utley), on the other side of 2nd base, has done slightly better, but certainly not what anyone expected. He has 7 RBI, is batting .250 and has hit 2 home runs. Clearly, both players are in need of an injection of Magical Smurf Juice to get them kick-stated in the right direction. I think the home crowd will be just what the doctor ordered.
The Rays, while they are undersea creatures, are not used to stormy weather and they are sure in for some this weekend. The pampered players from Tampa Bay will certainly miss the climate and weather controlled deep-sea environment of the Dome they normally play in. Look for the weather to play a part in the games tonight and maybe Sunday.
In the event of a rain-out tonight, all games will be pushed back one full day. Therefore Game 3 would be Sunday night, Game 4 on Monday night and Game 5 on Tuesday, which was originally a travel day. But so far, it is game on! I will be there tomorrow night if the rain holds up with Chutley Smurf in tow, attached to my backpack. J-Roll Smurf gets a much needed day off as he has outgrown my backpack. J If you see me wandering around, please say hello or toss Chutley Smurf a ball! And stay tuned for more World Series Smurf adventures, coming your way soon! And for those reading who are wondering if I have gone off my meds, then you may be in need of a humor injection. Go find yourself a stuffed toy and give it a great big hug! I promise you will feel much better J Go Phillies!
