A Solid Win
The Phillies beat Ben Sheets and the Milwaukee Brewers last night, 6-3 thanks to some clutch hitting by Ryan Howard and another great outing by Jamie Moyer. Except this time, Moyer pitched on only 3 days rest. He became the oldest pitcher to accomplish that feat since 1986 when Phil Niekro did it. Moyer went 5 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. I think Moyer must have found the fountain of youth and went for a swim. Whatever it is that keeps him going at 45 years of age, I wish he would share the secret with the rest of us!
The Phillies were off to a great start when Howard hit a 2-run homer in the 1st. It was his major league leading 43rd of the year. He just barely missed #44 later in the 4th inning, as the ball hit directly on the top of the padded wall in front of the Phillies bullpen…missed it by about 2 inches! It did wind up as an RBI double, with Chase Utley scoring on the hit. Every member of the starting line-up had a hit in the game, except for poor Pat Burrell who continues to look totally confused at the plate. The bullpen did NOT blow the lead in this game for a change…Ryan Madson pitched 2 scoreless innings; Chad Durbin came in to end the 8th inning on 1 pitch and Brad Lidge recorded save #36 as he set the Brewers down in order in the 9th. Overall, a nice, solid team win for the Phillies over a very tough pitcher in All-Star Ben Sheets. Makes you wish they looked this good every night!
Game 2 is tonight at 7:05pm…Cole Hamels will try to earn LUCKY win #13! Go Phillies!
