Offensive Offense Offends Another Starting Pitcher

The Phillies were swept by the Dodgers last night in a 4 game series after another great starting pitching performance, wasted once again, by a disgusting offensive output.  They lost 3-1 yesterday.  Brett Myers can join the support group for Cole Hamels now as he too has been shunned by his teammates who have simply been unable to produce runs for him.  Myers went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks and struck out 8 batters.  The offense?  TWO hits.  One from Jayson Werth and one from Chase Utley; the lone run was an RBI on a sac fly from Ryan Howard.  Actually, in the entire 4 game series, the Phillies as a unit hit for an average of only .194.  That brings their super grand total for the month of August to .206.

So, since I know I am tired of saying the same old thing over and over again, I thought I’d let Merriam-Webster say it for me.  Here is the definition of “Offense”, ya know, in case anyone was unclear:

Main Entry: of·fense

Variant(s): or of·fence \ə-ˈfen(t)s, especially for 3 ˈä-ˌfen(t)s, ˈȯ-\

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin offensa, from feminine of offensus, past participle of offendere

Date: 14th century

1 a obsolete : an act of stumbling b archaic : a cause or occasion of sin : STUMBLING BLOCK

2: something that outrages the moral or physical senses

3 a: the act of attacking : ASSAULT b: the means or method of attacking or of attempting to score c: the offensive team or members of a team playing offensive positions d: scoring ability

4 a: the act of displeasing or affronting b: the state of being insulted or morally outraged <takes offense at the slightest criticism>

5 a: a breach of a moral or social code : SIN, MISDEED b: mad.jpgan infraction of law; especiallyMISDEMEANOR

While #3 is of particular interest (SCORING ability), I really think the entire definition applies here, as we are all offended (see #4 – displeased and morally outraged; #2 – more outrage…) by the way these guys have been playing.  It is an offense (see #5 – Sin, Misdeed, breech of moral or social code) against the city of Philadelphia and all its fans that we are subjected to this mediocrity.

Now please excuse me while I go find a dark corner and a pillow to scream into…  If you see little men with white jackets coming to my house, you’ll know what happened.

WOW…Phils just ran into the Manny freight train! Hopefully it keeps rolling against the Brewers this weekend. Too bad they aren’t playing the Mets anytime soon.

Chad Durbin just posted a new blog entry that talks about the rough trip to LA and how he and the team is going to bounce back. It’s an interesting read and you gotta give the guy points for putting himself out there after blowing leads 2 nights in a row:
