Interleague Play Ends, And Not A Moment Too Soon

Can you say “nightmare”?  Well, wake me when it is over…oh, wait a minute…you say it is over?  Whew!  Thank goodness, because I could not take this interleague play even one second longer!  Posting the worst record for interleague play in all of baseball, the Phillies went 4-11 and have now lost their last 6 series since sweeping the Braves way back at the beginning of June.  The only good news is that the next series is back in Atlanta where, hopefully, they can get comfortable again and back to their winning ways.

I honestly don’t know what to say about the last two games.  Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer both pitched well, as expected.  The offense decided to play for Cole, but not for Jamie.  I thought for sure the pitcher the Phillies faced last night, who was younger and inexperienced was a guy they definitely should have hit.  But again, they were impatient at the plate; they swung at bad pitches and then did not protect the plate with 2 strike counts.  It’s like they were hitting backwards:  Swinging like mad with 0-1 strikes at any old crap and then standing there looking stupid watching strike 3 sail on by.  And how many times are these guys going to are argue balls and strikes with the home plate umpire?  This gets you nowhere!  If the pitch is close, especially with 2 strikes, you HAVE to swing.  If you don’t like it, you try to foul it off…what else can you do?  All this yapping is going to do nothing but get a lot of these players a bad rep with the umpires, and they will not be likely to see borderline calls go their way in the future.  Just one of those things that irks me…

So, I guess the All-Star voting is almost done (ends 7/2, midnight).  DSCF5510 fuzz.jpgHere is your last chance to get your VOTE in there!  Remember what I said a few weeks ago now…I taught my cat how to use the computer so he could vote in my absence, so NO excuses now!  In fact, my cat Tony is so smart, he in turn showed his brother, Fuzz the cat, how to use the laptop and he is also assisting in the process.  Fuzz prefers to wear his Phanatic slippers while voting, although sometimes they make typing difficult.  Or, at least that is his excuse for why he keeps “accidentally” voting for players on the Tigers roster.  It’s a feline thing I guess…  Ok, so keep voting…we need Phillies at the All-Star game!!!!

The part about them being impatient at the plate I’d been noticing for days at my blog. But them getting ticked off at the ump for call third strikes is new, and might be only showing frustration at their on inability to bat right now. But you’re right, they shouldn’t be arguing with the umps when things are going bad fro them, as it’ll get the umps poed at them and start close pitches strike just to tell them, ‘Okay, mister, I’m the one in control here, not you.’ Man, I think Charlie just need to call a general club house meeting and tell these guys we are going to go and talk over baseball hitting 101: Don’t swing at pitcher’s junk, don’t swing at balls that you can’t reach, (Ryan), don’t swing at the first blasted pitch unless you’re sure you can hit it (Rollins), be more patient at the plate (General), move the blasted runner over with less than two outs (General), etc. I wonder if it’s too soon to call off the ticker tape parade?

Talk about arguing…I’m sure you didn’t see it, but on Sunday Mike Jacobs started barking at the ump when he rang him up on a called third strike that was at shoe-level and inside. And that is NOT an exaggeration. Because there are always about 230 people for a Marlins home game you could hear everything Jacobs said to the ump because the field mics are turned all the way up, including “If you think that’s a strike, then you aren’t a Major League umpire.” Amazingly he didn’t get thrown out……is Vicente Padilla really 10-4? I happened to peek at the box score the other day and did a double take…I still think the Phillies are the team to beat in the NL East. Despite the recent skid I’m sure they will right the ship against Atlanta this week. They own the Braves this year.

Wow…how do you not get tossed for that? No “profanity” I guess…funny!! So, thanks for the words of encouragement…it has been a rough few weeks :o( Yeah, I am hoping we’ll bounce back in Atlanta. And you guys should have some fun beating the pants off the Nats! And hey, I was thinking of maybe heading down to Miami in Sept. for the Phillies-Marlins series so maybe I’ll boost the attendance to a huge 231! Maybe they should pay ME to go just to fill a seat? You’d think with the Fish kicking butt this year, more people would come to games. I guess the traffic is really just that bad. Been to that stadium a few times (I am actually a Dolphins fan, sadly) and I can say, it is in a BAD spot and not fun to get to. Anyway, have a good one!

Jacobs wasn’t thrown out for arguing with the ump? I guess he didn’t thrown a few f-bombs for that to have happened. Also thanks for the encouragement, but I got this really bad feeling in the bit of my stomach that it isn’t going to happen. Call be a pessimist right now, but I’d been following this team since 1970 to know that when they stink, they stay stinking until someone comes out and tells them, okay, guys, enough time to feel sorry for ourselves, it times to make the other teams pay for our misery. Hopefully Chase will be the one doing it, cause Jay-Ro certainly isn’t. Aaron Rowand, where are you???

Funny you should mention Rowand…I have already begun typing my “rant” on that particular topic :o) I was holding comment to see how these guys react tonight after the off day, but believe me, it’s coming… Something that has been bugging me for a long while now. Stay tuned… :o)
